Lightning can strike even when the skies above are clear and those sort of lightning strikes are far deadlier than the ones that often occur during rainfalls or thunderstorms.

If they should care enough to investigate properly, I am pretty sure that they might end up finding out that there was a thunderstorm several miles away despite the clouds being clear above that particular training ground at that point in time.

The fact that he was training alone likely increased the possibility. It is equally very likely that the vicinity of the training pitch has no tall conducting object or building. Thunder mostly strike the tallest peak in a particular area. That's why lightning conductor must be intalled on building that stands out above the rest. It is also not advisable to hold an umbrella while walking alone in an large open field. The metallic peak of your umbrella might stand out as the tallest object in your vicinity and could be a target to any thunderstorm around.

The guy is also likely to be a tall player, his jewellery laden neck might just be a target for thunder. Logical when you realize he is a goal keeper
