Water: is an essential food and basic component of life. The need for water is strongly ascending and has a diversified function, which is not only important for drinking purpose but, is also vital for any developmental activities.

Nowadays, the use and sustainability of water is getting more complex due to population growth, urbanization and industrialization.

For any developmental activity, both surface and groundwater sources are the main components depending on their quality and availability. In an areas where surface water is not feasible for the desired activity, groundwater is the second alternative (*but in Nigeria and other countries of today, it as become first choice the simple majority). What is groundwater exploration?
Groundwater exploration is the investigation of underground water formation to understand the hydrologic cycle, know the ground water quality and identify the nature, number and type of aquifers. Groundwater exploration in hard terrain is a very challenging and difficult task, if the promising groundwater zone are associated with fractured and fissured media. In such an environment, the groundwater potentiality depends mainly on the thickness of the weathered fractured layer overlying the basement.... Note that we have Basement complex and sedimentary terrain (we shall explain soon)....

Groundwater exploration Methods

Groundwater can be explored using different methods. The four major groundwater exploration methods are Areal, Surface method, subsurface method and esoteric methods. Among these methods esoteric is not based on science, mostly based on traditional indicators. But for the purpose of this discuss we will focus on a more scientific and generally accepted methods (Geophysical survey/investigation)

Geophysical survey/investigation is one the method under the surface method of groundwater exploration. This method is very important for both groundwater resource mapping and quality evaluations. Its application for groundwater exploration purpose has increased over the last few years due to rapid advances in computer packages and associated numerical modeling solution.
Geophysical survey incorporates the Vertical Electrical Sounding (VES) and Horizontal Profiling (HP) activities. The vertical electrical sounding is currently being very popular with groundwater investigations due to it simplicity. This Geophysical survey method is the detection of the effects produced by the flow of electric current inside the earth. It provides depth and thickness of of various subsurface layer and their relative yielding capacities.

The subsurface and surface water potential is dependent on various factors; Climate, Geology, vegetation, topography, elevation etc....

Discussion on Borehole drilling

After carefully looking at Geophysical survey/investigation,it will be of interest to understand that not conducting a Geophysical survey/investigation is like planing to build a house without a foundation.
The data generated from the survey will lead you to a detailed planing on cost to drill the borehole.
Borehole drilling differs from place to place, state to state. Drilling a borehole in Lagos is different from drilling a Borehole in Abeokuta and vis-a-vis, likewise drilling a Borehole in Ibadan is different from drilling a Borehole in Ondo. There are variation in depth and underlying structure. That is why someone in Ibadan can spend 700,000 naira to drill a depth of 80m and someone in Ogun will spend 900,000 on a depth of 80m. (As an example) The variation comes as a result of the the underlying rocks/materials.
You would have seen cases where houses beside you will have more water and you are struggling to get your tank full.
