CHAPTER EIGHT
I passed the junction again for two week but could not find the breadseller.
"something is wrong somewhere"I muttered and packed my car.I walked up to the empty kiosk and decided to ask her neighbour who also sells bread,this woman must have noticed that i was a regular customer of the girl.
"Hello madam,i am looking for this young lady that sells bread,for the past two weeks i have not seen her here"I said to the woman.
"Ohh,poor girl must be suffering by now"the woman replied.
"How"i asked confused.
"So you dont know her?Who dont know her?Sometimes i do pity her but it was rumoured that she was responsible for her fathers' death"The woman said.I still could not understand.
"How did she kill him"I inquired curiously.
"some people say she is a witch but she looks far innocent than that especially now that her father younger brother and his family are putting her through hell of a life"The woman replied.
She possibly could not be what people say she was,i knew for sure,i told my self.

"Wait!her uncle does what to her"I asked.
"Her uncle and his wife maltreat her,i knew her when she was still going to secondary school about six years ago before her parent demise and since then she dropped out"

"I also heard her parent left a huge fortune for her before he died but her uncle have siphoned it all and sentenced her to torture"The woman said sadly.

The woman quickly packed up her wares and soon we were driving in my car.
The woman was directing me the way when all of a sudden I saw a man in hot pursuit of a lady with matchete,i pedaled slowly only to discover it was Chimamanda.I parked well and alighted,the woman with me too alighted.I rushed to shield her from the vicious looking man who was closing on her pace.
Chimamanda in turn hid in my back even though she was suprised to see me.
"why are you chasing her"I challenged.
"That foolish girl is pregnant"

I turned in shock to Chimamanda.
"Is that true"I asked.
She nodded sobbing.
"I have asked her to provide the person responsible for that bastard in her womb and she is telling me she was raped"The man poured out his anger on his word.
"I swear to God,i was raped by two men last two weeks monday when i was returning home in the night"Chimamanda said crying.
Did i just heard her say last two weeks monday?That was the day i too her out.
I got the picture now,i regretted leaving her alone to go home that night.
"Papa calm down,lets look into this very well"this was the first time the woman with me spoke.

Chimamanda was now hiding behing me crying.I held her tight and then motioned to the other woman with me to take her to the car.
"I have a father about your age so i wont want to hit you badly,so just turn around and leave now"I ordered with an aura of a military personel,i was sure he took notice of it.
He turned reluctantly and went away without looking back.
I returned back to my car and drove without saying a word.
I dropped the woman at her house and threw a wad of money to her which she thanked me profusely.
I drove home straight,i helped Chimamanda down the car even into the house.
Charles was in the sitting room watching T.V,he was munching what he called his appetiser`popcorn and red wine'.
I greeted him and he turned with a frown.
"where have you been all day,you 've started keeping late hours"he paused when he caught sight of the bedraggled Chimamanda shuddering beside me.
He sat up immediately and dropped his appetiser`popcorn and red wine

I noticed his amazement,he was caught off guard.
"Mike dont tell me you were all day with this girl"he queried with hands akimbo like a leopard about strike.
"I will explain later please"I replied and turned to Chimamanda.
"The bathroom is over there,go and freshen up while i go find a cloth you will put on"I said quietly to her.she only nodded and made to move.
"Dont you dare move an inch from there you bitch"Charles fired and turned round the sofa to face us squarely therefore blocking the only passage to the bathroom.
"Mike,why are you behaving like you own this house,did you seek my permission before you brought this thing to my house"He fumed as his eyes went round Chimamanda body in disgust.
"Charles i am so sorry for that but i said i will explain later but for now she need to tidy up"I replied calmly though i was already pissed off inside me.
"Sorry sir,i can leave if you want me to"Her melodious voice rang innocently.
I turned in haste"you will not leave,this is our house,its my house to"I told her.

"You are stupid"Charles hollered angrily"she will not stay in this house tonight or i will do something stupid"he fired.
I was taken aback with his action.Did he know this girl before?I just could not really understand his bitterness.
I turned to Chimamanda"lets go somewhere else okay"I told her and we turned facing the door.I turned to give Charles an evil stare before i led her out of the house.Chimamanda was already sobbing already.
"It's okay,thats just who he is"I consoled her.
"Hei Musa,open the gate"I told the gateman who opened the gate for me to drive out.
"I am taking you to my other house at Larey crescent,do you know the place?"I said wanting to start a conversation.
"Yes"she replied lightly.
I noticed she was not happy with my conversation so i nipped the bud.
I drove to my other house at Larey crescent Onne,it was fenceless so i parked at the front and we alighted.
I opened the door and led her into the sitting room.You need to see the excitement written on her face.
I smiled with satisfaction.

"This is where you will be staying for now.This is my private property.That place i took you before is my official apartment"I said.It was a six bedroom bungalow duplex.
"Who was that guy"she asked and sat on one of the cushion opposite me.I was shocked she asked me that question.
I hesitated at first"he is my friend"i later replied"Go to the bathroom"i added and pointed the direction.
She nodded and went under the curtain immediately.
I plied out my phone and punched my caretaker number,it rang and he picked.
"hello Bello,come over to the house now,i am there"i said and hung up.
Some minutes later,the caretaker a middle aged man came in.
I rushed to get a shirt and knicker for Amanda,she wore it and came to join us in the sitting room.
I glanced at my wristwatch,it was 09:00pm.
"This lady will be occupying this house for now"I told Bello who nodded.
"Amanda this is your new home,anything you want to eat is in any fridge in this house and in the kitchen,I will be leaving now.I will check on you tomorrow.Bye

CHAPTER NINE
I was drinking tea in my office as i skimmed through the files on my table when Charles barged in without knocking.
I looked up to see him staring down at me.
"Why 're you staring down at me like this?wont you sit down"I said and returned my gaze on the files on my table.
"Mike i demand explanation for what you've done"His tone was boiling.
"What is that"I asked in pretence,i was expecting this.
"Why did you employ that loose prostitutes to work as your P.A"
"Ohh that!!she will just be handling my files,thats all.She need help so thats just how i can render help"I replied indifferently.
"How this girl have not done something to you?An ordinary breadseller"

I turned to Charles"see you at lunch"I disharged him and he turned and left as man in overflowing agbada trolled into my office with all smiles.
I got up and we shook hands.
"Chief Rotimi,the new commissioner of State Oil and Gas sector,a delegate from the Ministry of Petroleum Resources"the man introduced.

As Charles entered into his office,he pulled his suit jacket and flung it on his swivel chair.He stomped on the floor and sat on his table in uneasiness.What mistake was this?his paranoia have taken over him.
He never wanted to offend Mike who was a good friend to him but his father was forcing him coupled with the fact that Mike was now his superior when both of them were employed at the same year.
He fell into his swivel chair and flashed back.

"You need to do it"Mr Chima his father told him.
"But why dad?i thought this matter was already dead and we have all buried the hatchet so why are you trying to do this again"He asked his father in disssppointment.
"You see,i cant forgive Clement in all my life,first of all he snatched my girlfriend from me and went ahead to marry her,secondly our life is at stake because the ritual i did for Clement went with a condition that nobody from Clement family will marry otherwise i and my family will die"Chima told his son.
"What"Charles cried

"Yes,i thought i was free until the herbalist came to remind me of it.I had told the herbalist to chained their marital life down but he said that will be impossible"

Charles opened the door to find the lady sitting beside Mike chair.
Though Mike was not in,she was busy on his system.
He greeted coldly and she looked up.
"Good morning sir,nice to meet you"Amanda offered her hand for a handshake,Charles too it.
He saw her bulging stomach which showed she was in her early pregnancy.
"how is work going"He asked.
"Very good"she replied.
He was suprised that she did not give him a malicious demeanour after seeing he was the one who chased her out that night.
"If there is anything you want me to do,just call me"He said.
"Sure i will"she replied,he turned and left.
As he opened his office door,he plied out his phone and call his father.
"Hello dad,she have resumed work today"
"You can strike now,this is the opportunity you have son"his father told him.
"I will call my boys now to abduct her on her way home today,should we waste her"he asked.
"Not now son,you need to flush that baby out,i dont trust Mike,he might be telling lies about the pregnancy"Mr Chima replied.

I parked my car in front of the hotel i was residing at Garki, before i dialed Amanda number.She picked.

Amanda rounded up her job and locked the office,she exchanged some pleasantries with some of the staffs who werrme already liking her already.
She met Charles entering into his car.She waved him and watched him drove out of the compound.
The driver Mike assigned to drive her home was already in the car waiting.
"Hello sir"she said softly.The driver looked at her.
"I wont be driving in the car,i want you to get me a taxi"she told him.
The driver did not hesitate,he left and return some minutes later with one in which she boarded home.

Charles flung his phone to the back seat and banged his hand on the wheel in anger.
He reversed the car and drove straight to the office.
He met the security guards loitering around.
"did you see the newest staff left this place"he asked one.
"which newest staff"the security guard asked.
"Fool!the pregnant one"
"ohh,she left in a taxi"the security man replied.
"Taxi!,but she have a car"he exclaimed.
"Perhaps the car developed some faults,she sent Aliyu to get her a taxi"the security guarfd emphasised.
Charles swallowed hard,turned and left.
He drove away in annoyance.
He was about to eat when his phone rang,it was Mike.
