Sometimes I wonder how grown men/women like you reason. For your information, school fees were paid preceding COVID-19. If you still dont know, the school term has not been completed before the pandemic. There is nothing stopping the private school owners from giving out monthly palliative to their teachers/staff even if it is a quarter of their salaries. It might interest you to know that some of these schools if not most of them have since the month of June sent out SMS messages to parents to actually pay the third term school fees. It is not hearsay, I am a parent.

Honestly I’m tired of debating this particular topic. One thing is obvious, our government don’t care about her citizens so why should reopening of schools be their concern? Meanwhile they are still embezzling billions everyday all in the name of school feeding program even when the said schools are closedown.
If really this government wants her citizens to go back to school, they would have worked out modalities of how to achieve that but NO, they won’t do it.
It pains me that people are victimizing private school teachers and proprietors for demanding the opening of schools. People, it’s not only about the money! Have y’all thought about the knowledge gap that will be experienced if schools are allowed to stay shut for too long? We may not feel in now but in the near future we will see the implication of what we did to ourselves.
I was really appalled when our minister of Education said we’d rather lose a year of learning than endanger students. Hello! Both are dangerous scenarios. These children’s parents already go out and come in, that’s endangering the children as well. We live in a dangerous world and continuing to cower in our homes won’t make the problem to go away.
COVID-19 is not going away next year even if there’s a vaccine, it won’t still go away in the next 2 years. Will our schools be closed even till then?
We just like copying what other countries do but we don’t do it well. Canada ended their school year immediately Covid-19 began but they are still conducting online teaching religiously and the Canadian government didn’t abandon her citizens or foreigners. Everyone is well catered for. Even the students are being paid! Why are our leaders so wicked to her people? Just why?
And I can see that wickedness exhibited here. Just because your business or job is not affected by this virus, you now look down on those that were as if it’s their fault. You even go as low as insult them. No empathy whatsoever. Karma is watching all of us.

Dont mind the school proprietors oo! .Why should our children be exposed when we are still yet to know our bearing in eliminating the virus from our society? .
Secondly most teachers now organizes virtual classes for children in other to keep up with academic work .Parent have to pay for each child .For now our children should be protected since the virus is still very much at large with people dying daily .

Whoever wrote this, something has gone wrong with you. Do you think the children where they are haven't contacted the virus? They go to play, their parents return from work, do they practice social distancing in thier homes? You lock down schools, yet nothing is on ground to ensure life's return to normal. You lock down schools and abandone the teachers in private schools? Countries that have been hit hard with this disease, are opening. Can't we live and manage with it, since it's going to be with us for a while?

What is different in Sweden compared to Naija,is it the air or the temperature? There was no lockdown for one day or wearing masks ,everyone goes out as they like. Sweden has 74,000 cases ,5,526 deaths in a country of 10 million population.Once their vaccines are ready, corona go disapppear.

Is it not the same Parents that are already sending their children to backyard lessons?

You seem to be lost in time. Wake up bro. The world has moved on.

Parents are in fact in the fore front of this reopening campaign. Everyone is tired of kids being home all day. Of course there are a few undecided parents. Majority want to move on.

You will see how filled up schools will become on resumption. You can keep your holy child at home and teach him/her by yourself all you want.

There is no doubt that there are genuine reasons why schools should be closed in Nigeria. In fact, I agree with many of the arguments that people have made to defend this. However, there are many factors that must be considered before we conclude the matter. I'll just itemise them:

1. Covid-19 has no cure or vaccine and even if one comes up tomorrow, it'll realistically take more than 3 years to reach up to 30% of the Nigerian population. Corona is here to stay. There's no future utopia where the virus magically disappears. It won't go away next year so postponing resumption of schools means postponing the inevitable. In fact, by next year, for instance, the cases may be in the millions in Nigeria. Will schools be closed forever? Or you think our insensitive government will perform some magic?

2. Social distancing doesn't work in Nigeria. I don't know about your location but in mine, people go about their normal lives and there's nothing anyone can do about it. The children are still playing with their mates every day. Parents go to work and markets and may likely import the virus to their homes.

3. Children still go to churches or mosques (which are open in most places). Religious and social gatherings are known super spreaders of the virus.

4. So far, children are nowhere near vulnerable as far as Covid-19 is concerned. While this argument can be upended, it is a strong factor nonetheless. Children are not so much in danger as their teachers and the teachers are mature enough to protect themselves adequately.

5. Students in public schools in remote and riverine areas are struggling and therefore may face certain learning challenges if they stay out of school for too long. Many may lose interest in schools altogether. I have been to these places and I know how averse they are to education. Many simply go to school because their mates are going. Should they stay home for long periods, they may likely never resume whenever schools open (which, going by the logic of some concerns, can take more than 2 years).

6. Private school teachers have not been paid for months because, unlike the public sector, they have to work before they are paid. Furthermore, many of them have been organising lessons for miserly wages (this also contradicts why schools should be closed). Indeed, many of those who want schools to remain closed have means of educating their children effectively, forgetting the fisherman's child in Oporoza who either goes to school or hunts for bait worms.

7. Once again, corona is here to stay. There are many workarounds that can be easily adopted to curtail populated classrooms. We must either accept the reality of Covid-19 or simply all remain at home - no markets, malls, churches, mosques, work etc because no one is better or worse than schools as far as the virus is concerned. If you can afford homeschooling or online learning for your children, you should definitely go for it. However, what is good for Bernard is not necessarily good for Benetutukayo and it is nobody's fault that we have an irresponsible government that can't provide adequate infrastructure for times like this.

I am a realist in matters like this but there are factors that policy makers must consider even if schools must remain closed. Until the factors are appropriately pictured, we may be doing more harm due to our inability to see the wider picture. There are reasons why the lockdown didn't last in Nigeria. These are the same reasons why schools can't remain closed indefinitely.

The guy that composed this, you head get oil. You have said it all.

That is why they are more immune to new strains of infections in the first place.

Genuine reasons advanced.... The root of problem in education sector is not tackle neither is private/ public school difference talked about. Nigeria State operate on a faulty system hence we find ourselves here.

Not only government or NUT failed to teachers most especially private school teachers, you and I conspires in inflicting pains on teachers HOW?

THANKS to coronavirus that exposes lies and inadequacies in our society. Many of us are OKAY with the miserable life of teachers since few of us are priviledge to live satisfactory life. Look at the amount you spent on car maintenance, fuelling generator, recharge cards on monthly basis and compare it with amount you pay on termly basis for your children/wards as school fees, when you and Government pay less to education, proprietors and Government will pay less to teachers. Both private and public schools are ill equipped in terms of infrastructure, many of us never join force to better the life teachers in both private and public schools, we often look away at non availability of needed materials/infrastructure in schools. The society had long LOOKED AWAY at the plight of teachers and non existing infrastructure. Thanks to COVID 19 that is about to reset our BRAINS to default settings. Virus not humans - God is GREAT.

The organisers of the protest should know that CROWD is prohibited the more reason why schools and worship centers are closed. I will suggest other alternatives should be exhausted.
Let the new association be proactive by engaging Government as follows :1. That private school teachers are pathners in education sector since Government alone cannot render service of teaching/learning hence need for WELFARE of private school teachers pre/post COVID 19.

2. A Visit to NATIONAL ASSEMBLY and HOUSE OF ASSEMBLY in Nigeria and stress importance of private school teachers in national development hence a benchmark be legislate for staff salary and allowances to be adhere to by proprietors/proprietress. In making laws ALL stakeholders make input.

3. Constant engagement of ALL stakeholders in policy formulation, infrastructure development and performance of students/pupils..
Thanks

Aluta continua, Victoria ascerta

Intellectual engagement first...

But the people in most riverine communities most especially the Ijaw rivine communities, is that they do not believe in this Covid 19 and HIV. They do not like to go to school as well. If Bill Gate will make out time to come to these communities to tell them the dangers associated with this Covid 19 and HiV; trust me, they will never listen to him.
