Hail Satan? is a new documentary directed by US film-maker Penny Lane that follows the Satanic Temple and co-founder Lucien Greaves to understand their beliefs and practices. What the film finds: the group is more focused on supporting social justice and human rights than worshipping the devil himself.

The Temple was founded in 2013, and is separate from The Church of Satan, which was founded in 1966 by Anton Lavey in San Francisco, California. 

The Temple’s mission is to “to encourage benevolence and empathy among all people, reject tyrannical authority, advocate practical common sense and justice, and be directed by the human conscience to undertake noble pursuits guided by the individual will." Itfollows seven tenets which focus on empathy, compassion, justice and bodily autonomy.

"I had heard about the Satanic Temple when they were doing their campaign in Oklahoma," Lane said, according to BBC News. "I thought it was a very funny joke from afar, that they were sort of pretending to be Satanists, but I discovered they had at that point 50,000 members.”

According to Greaves, the Temple is mostly made up of LGBTQ+ people who feel disowned and disenfranchised from the traditional religious institution, saying “we will always fight them, we will fight them to the death to ensure that there are equal rights for the gay community.”

“From the start, when one of our early actions was the Pink Mass, a lot of LGBTQ people were looking for another community that didn’t see them as defined by their sexual orientation,” Greaves says. “Within the Satanic Temple, we’re all pretty much one and the same. We’re all Satanists and it’s not like we have ‘tolerance’ for trans people or gay people or sex workers, we just don’t fucking care, and a lot of people in those communities appreciate that.”

According to Greaves, the Temple is also involved in Pride parades around the country and vows to protect and fight for the gay community and their rights. The co-founder also says that he regularly receives death threats from white and Christian supremacy groups like the Ku Klux Klan.

“One problem is that a lot of the threats come through Facebook and Facebook has their own policies on regulating death threats they have never found a death threat made against the Satanic Temple to be outside their terms of service,” Greaves explains. “There’s always that question whether or not it’s a credible threat. And you just never know until somebody does something radically stupid. But that’s just part of the day to day.”

(CNN)"It really depends what you want. Boy? Girl? Young? Old?"

The man on the phone was offering us young children with the casualness of a market trader. After a week of back and forth phone calls, his initial caginess had given way to greed. He'd heard my foreign accent and clearly decided I would pay more than the domestic rate.

"We can get," he said.

We'd been put in touch with the man through a contact on the ground. We were told he was one of the men running this "unofficial" displaced camp -- one of the many that has mushroomed in the town of Yola as the influx of people fleeing Boko Haram has grown beyond the capacity of the official camps.

It had all been heartbreakingly simple. We'd asked who had children available to "foster" -- a catch-all code word designed to conceal the true intent of those offering up the orphaned children. The man on the phone was the end result of those inquiries.

When our colleague want to see them, he was shown a group of children and asked which one he wanted to take. One, two maybe? He escaped by saying he needed to check with his "madam" -- me.

I called. The man picked up and began referring to me as "sister." I told him we wanted to know what we'd need to do, if we decided we did want to "foster" the children.

He told me, "Sister, Jesus will reward me," so the "fostering" was free, he said. No need for any pesky paperwork -- just a reassurance from me that the children, if I chose to take them, would "live in my heart." If I could also then find it "in my heart" to donate to those still in the camp, then that would be "God's work."

In spite of the harsh measures the Nigerian government has put in place to punish human traffickers, by the government's own admission, 8 million children are currently engaged in forced labor.

The Global Slavery Index says Nigeria has the highest number of people in modern slavery of any sub-Saharan country. Paradoxically, the group also rates Nigeria's anti-trafficking agency, Naptip, as one of the strongest government responses on the continent -- but it's clearly overwhelmed by the realities of working in what is now a zone of military operations, Nigeria's north.

As the insecurity in the region has spiraled, the worry is that more and more children are falling through the cracks. And as Boko Haram increases its reliance on child suicide bombers, concerns are growing that orphaned children could end up in the hands of the terror group.

At the camp where we finally met the man face to face, there was no attempt at subterfuge. We spoke in normal tones in full view of the children playing. I could have had one of them, I was told, but because I'd specified a younger child, they'd only identified one so far -- a 3-year-old. Did I want to consider an older girl? A 12-year-old maybe? She could look after the 3-year-old, and cook and clean. Either way, two girls would be ready tomorrow, he said. I could see them then.

Our last phone conversation revolved around what an appropriate "donation" would be in exchange for the children. He couldn't, he said, bargain for it. He then proceeded to do just that, laughing down the phone at my first tentative guess of $200. Laughing again at $300.



We finally found a figure he didn't find funny -- $500. I put the phone down and we traveled back to the capital that day to show Naptip what we'd found.

May 22, 2001 -- Mike Sheil traveled to West Africa to photograph the lives of children trafficked as slaves and forced into marriage.

He was sent by Anti-Slavery International, a British charity, to Benin, where children are sold into slavery, and Gabon, where many of them end up.

Benin is one of the poorest countries in the world and people are just desperate. They very often do not have enough to feed their family. If someone offers to take their child away I think it's almost a relief.


They are currently looking after 16 in their house in Libreville. Every child they get costs them effectively $250 (U.S.) to repatriate. You can work out for yourself that they need a lot of money just to get these girls back home. And they haven't got it.

Murimata

This girl is Murimata. Murimata is 15 and she is now HIV positive. In the picture she's eight months pregnant. She has now had the baby boy. But that girl is going to die. She was brought overland to a place called Ebono. Whilst she was there the boatman used to come along each night and take out the elder girls and rape them. So she has suffered from multiple rape. So her life is ended, basically.

Aminata

This girl's name is Aminata. She was totally traumatized, in a really dreadful state. The photograph was taken 24 hours after she was found. She was sitting under a tree sobbing her heart out. The reason she was crying is that she had stolen some biscuits from the kitchen and she was scared that someone was going to come along and take the biscuits away and beat her. It's bestial, to see children reduced to that state of abject terror. It's quite horrifying.

The Sisters

These are two sisters. They are absolutely lovely little girls. They had been trafficked. They had been in Gabon for about five months. What happened was that the elder sister got very upset when her younger sister was actually tied up and beaten and she was out, sent out for something, and she saw a policeman and she went and told him about the problem. And the policeman, full credit to him, took her to the embassy and they then went and rescued her sister.

What I said to them was, "What's was the worst thing that happened to you?" And she said, "I was tied up and they beat me." So it was not me suggesting that those children were beaten. That was the child volunteering that she had been beaten. So I have no doubt at all that someone took a 6-year-old-child and tied her and beat her.

There needs to be an awareness in the rest of the world that this is a major problem and in the 21st century it's an absolute disgrace. It really is, this is a filthy business. Assistance needs to be given to the people who are trying to rescue these children and get them back to their homes. That is a matter of absolute priority.
