Inarguably, Nelson Mandela and Thomas Sankara are the best African president ever, who should be regarded as the best African president of all time between Nelson Mandela and Thomas Sankara?

African presidents have ruled and died but their legacies lives on, some African president are either know for their cruelty or benevolent act. Nelson Mandela of South Africa and Thomas Sankara of Burkina faso are two African presidents that really stood out because they fought for their country and Africa at large to make it a better place.


THOMAS ISIDORE NOEL SANKARA

Thomas Isidore Noel Sankara ( 21 December,1949-15 October,1987). He was the president of Burkina Faso from 1983-1987. A military captain, Pan-Africanist theorist who was loved by all as a charismatic and iconic figure of Revolution. He is commonly referred to as "Africa Che Guevera" and renamed Republic of Upper Volta to Burkina Faso.

THOMAS SANKARA ACHIEVERMENTS:

1. He initiated a nation-wide literacy campaign, increasing the literacy rate from 13% in 1983 to 73% in 1987.

2. He sold off the government fleet of Mercedes cars and made the Renault 5 (the cheapest car sold in Burkina Faso at that time) the official service car of the ministers.

3. As President, he lowered his salary to $450 a month and limited his possessions to a car, four bikes, three guitars, a fridge and a broken freezer, he refused to use the air conditioning in his office saying such luxuries is not available to everyone.

4. He reduced the salaries of all public servants, including his own, and forbade the use of government Chauffeurs and 1st class airline tickets.

5. He required public servants to wear a traditional tunic, woven from Burkinabe cotton and sewn by Burkinabe craftsmen (The reason being to rely upon local industry and identity rather than foreign industry and identity).

6. He built roads and a railway to tie the nation together without foreign aid saying that “he who feeds you, controls you.”

7. He outlawed female genital mutilation, forced marriages and polygamy in support of Women’s rights and he wrote the new national anthem himself.

NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA.

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela ( 18 July 1918-5 December 2013). He was a South African anti-aparthied revolutionary, political leader and a philanthropist, he served as the president of South Africa from 1994-1998 and was the country's first black president. He is regarded as icon of democracy and social justice with over 250 honours and awards. Mandela is often referred to as "Madiba" meaning the father of the Nation.

NELSON MANDELA ACHIEVEMENTS:

1. Mandela launches the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, a charitable organization which aims to help young people, particularly orphans of the AIDS crisis.

2. Mandela signs into law the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, one of the most progressive constitutions in the world. It established a strong central government based on majority rule, and guaranteeing both the rights of minorities and the freedom of expression.

3. Mandela raised money to build schools and clinics in South Africa’s rural areas; advocated for peace and equality.

4. Mandela and De Klerk jointly win the Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to end apartheid peacefully.

5. Mandela introduces the Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) to address socio-economic issues such as jobs, land, housing, water, electricity, telecommunications and transport and resolve and alleviate poverty.

Paul Kagame of Rwanda. Forget about the over hyped Mandella.

They were great African leaders. Even in hundred years, Nigeria will not be able to produce a leader that has the reputation of Thomas Sankara and Nelson Mandela

They are men who's names still reverberate long after their death.

The only Nigerian leader whose name reverberates is Abacha, the amount still being recovered from him over 20 years since his death, still reverberates everywhere

Those are great leaders! You don’t ask who is the best amongst them, as there is no real answer to that cos they served different countries under different set of circumstances. Suffice to say, they were outstanding in their genuine service to their people.

If only Nigeria would have half of a Thomas Sankara in Power, the nation will start changing. leaders here, even if many may not know it yet in that mold in Nigeria are Obaseki and Fashola(when he served Lagos). We are however too blinded by our primordial sentiments to know good things when we see them and unfortunately often fight against/resist them.

Nelson Mandela wasn't that great as a president.
