In the 19th century they finally built the engineering miracle that solved the problem of infections like dysentery etc and later antibiotics to bacterial infection.

Well before then, Africans separated what went into their mouth from what came out of their anus. They always built toilet far from the house or at the far back of the house.

When you are eating, we are encouraged to use one hand but the other when cleaning our anus for reasons discovered in the 19th century Europe. Today those reasons are history since we have a way of flushing our waste far.

Different society have their own customs and superstitions. For example, in Japan if you eat noodles without making the slurpy sound when you suck the noodles in, you'll be said to be disrespectful and lack appreciation for the food... Doesn't that custom look funny and should be changed..

Some of these customs and traditions we have might stem out from funny coincidences.. For example killing of twins might probably start when an eclipse occurred right after twins were given birth to and the elders took it to mean that twins were evil and causes day to become night..
The fact that we were born into some customs and traditions doesn't mean we must adhere to all of them.. We should learn to accept changes..

I have always wanted to ask this question for sometime now cos i don't really understand the mystery behind it.

I went to a shop to buy some provision, i tried to pay the seller with my left hand because my right hand was occupied with my tool box, she insisted i must give her the money with my right hand which i have no problem with, but i really want to know the reason so i thought bringing it up here will go a long way hearing different people's opinions.

People see it as a bad manner, but to me, it means nothing. I believe one cannot wash right hand effectively without the left hand. So why the condemnation? Is there any religious reference to back it up with?

You deserve happiness in life for this comment especially coming from a lady. People feel they must question every African cultural practice but accept foreign ones. In life there is symbolism. Even the Bible depicts similar symbolism in several cases.

God created some human parts in twos/pairs e.g. eyes, legs, hands, kidneys so that one could easily assist/ support the other. Poverty, superstition, culture, religion and low IQ are the major factors. Do u expect me to reject a huge sum or an appointment letter because the person use his left hand?

It all boils to religious beliefs, esp in the christiandom comparing the two that where crucified with Jesus Christ as the one on the left hand side was believe to have mocked Christ.

It's a serious issue I am still battling with it presently. The yoruba elders see it as a disrespect and lack of honour to use left hand to give them something or receive something from them. The mentality behind it is that it's the left hand that is used to wash our bum bum after defeacation. As a result of this I used to be very angry whenever someone use left hand to receive or give me something. I see it as a sign of being disrespectful but it's what I learnt from the people in my environment where I grow up maybe I can change the mentality if I can see reasonable reason to do so on this platform.
