COVID-19 epicentre Wuhan has been partially inundated by rising rivers with the peak to arrive this week. The torrential downpours had left atleast 141 dead or missing and 2.2million people evacuated, destroying atleast 28,000 houses

Multiple Chinese provinces have entered 'wartime mode' to fight what state media called a 'flood catastrophe' as torrential downpours batter the country.

Wuhan, which has just fought the COVID-19 outbreak, raised its flood emergency response to 'alert level two' last week. Thousands of disaster-relief workers are on standby after parts of the city were inundated by rising rivers - with officials predicting the flood peak to arrive this week.

Authorities have activated emergency response to severe flooding in provinces including Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan and Guizhou.

Floods across large swathes of central and eastern China are hitting record levels, with authorities warning the worst was yet to come.

The coronavirus ground zero of Wuhan, through which the mighty Yangtze River winds, is on an expanding list of areas warily watching the rising waters.

Local officials warned that the Yangtze could hit its third-highest levels in history in the city of 11million on Thursday.

At a flood-fighting meeting on Sunday, Wuhan leaders described the situation as 'extremely severe'.

Summer flooding has been an annual scourge in China since ancient times, often focused along the vast Yangtze basin that drains much of the central part of the country.

Steady rains since late June have flooded huge areas, leaving more than 140 people dead or missing so far, affecting 38million others and destroying 28,000 homes, according to the latest central government tallies.

The adverse weather has also caused 82.2billion yuan in economic losses, reported the Global Times.

But worsening downpours since last week have caused water levels to spike higher and the government to ramp up alert levels.

Thirty-three rivers have reached record highs, while alerts have been issued on a total of 433 rivers, officials from the Ministry of Water Resources said during a briefing in Beijing on Monday.

Video broadcast by Chinese state-run media at the weekend showed vast stretches of cities and towns inundated by water that rose in some places to the roofs of single-story homes, as rescue personnel evacuated men, women and children aboard inflatable boats.

Elsewhere, homes were shown flattened by landslides that had tumbled from water-logged hillsides.

China's worst floods in recent decades came in 1998 during an El Nino weather effect, killing more than 4,000 people, mostly around the Yangtze.

it Wuhan again. I really admire the sacrifice of those officials. Rip to the dead. On a second thought maybe the flood just washed away all the virus.

Rip to the deads... Lets talk about China vs USA/UK war

People here writing nonsense about China spying with their equipment forget that the only country with evidence of spying on other country and even their so-called allies is the US of A....."a person that kills with knife gets jittery the minute somebody walks behind him with a knife". There is a big technological war going on between the US and China, anyone deluding themselves that either country will not spy on others to gain some advantage at some point is missing the point. China has some very daring ambition to replace the US as both a superpower and economic behemoth and that scares the US to her bone marrow. China is intentional in its policy and effort towards reaching their goals is building path infrastructure that connects China to the rest of the world especially Europe through her Belt and Road Initiative. If you have read about the old silk road you would understand how ambitious the Belt and Road Initiative is. China already has identified the technology that will lead the future economy and they are slowly but surely putting resources in R and D and results have put them in dominance in all of these areas, Renewable Energy Technology, China has the biggest EV market and the largest solar panel market. Some of the world's largest deployments of solar energy Infrastructure are in China. In fact, in some places in China, you get incentives for buying an EV and almost find impossible to get a number plate if you are buying a fossile driven car. When it comes to Cellular Technology, China dominates the 4G technology world over, they still own more than 25 percent of the 4G technology patent and are now dominating patents again on 5G technology, Huawei alone has over 15 percent of patents on 5G technology, and they are like over a year ahead of their rivals Nokia and Ericsson. Huawei's 5G RnD budget alone is more than what the entire players have in their budgets combined. The results can be surprising. In AI, China is also leading and have the largest deployments of AI in the world, we saw it in Wuhan, they use AI for their streets that integrates everything people do to the point it is scary but the reality is that they are going and getting somewhere with all of these. China did not become this powerful by playing nice or side kick to any powerful country. Instead of Nigerians to learn from how China is defining her future and putting action to purpose, idiots are busy taking sides with Donald Trump who is way above his head with all his gragrah and movement policies that has only done nothing but make China more aggressive and resolved in their pursuit. Come 10 years from now,no damn country will dare do to any Chinese company what America is trying to do with Huawei. At the end of all of these, is consistency on the part of China while in the US one election wave will take away the president and another one will come with a different agenda... China is playing the long game while many of us are here praising Donald Trump as if whatever Donald Trump is doing has stopped China from doing what it is doing. As we write and praise Trump for taking his usual irrational gragra policies, China is busy using deft ways and very subtle ways to undermine the US and her systems and replace them with theirs through investments outside of China that gives them controlling stakes and influence in these countries. From Europe to Africa to Australia China has investments and influence that's hard for any government to overlook. When the Australians were busy threatening China with investigating them for Corona,China pulled some strings and the Australian politicians were all over the place blaming their governments for the harsh political moves from China.... Aussie barley got slapped with crazy taxes, even their mining Industry got a hot front as China withdrew some investments. The reality is when you get to the level of the US and China you learn to use your leverage on these other countries to keep them in line....the US has always done this and call it soft power until Donald Trump came to the scene and made it a policy to openly cajole other countries with tax, sanctions and withdrawal of military assistance and so on..... If we all have sense,we will know that in this kind of fight there are no sides, they are both enemies and friends to the rest of us....
