The virus was first reported in Wuhan, China in December 2019. Since then, the pandemic has spread across the world and infected 13,271,756 people. Mr Trump has condemned China for not being transparent about the risks the virus posed to the world.


The US President said at a White House press conference that he holds China “fully responsible” for COVID-19.

He said: “Make no mistake.

“We hold China fully responsible for concealing the virus and unleashing it upon the world.

“They could have stopped it, they should have stopped it.

“It would have been very easy to do at the source, when it happened.”

In retaliation to China’s handling of the coronavirus pandemic, Mr Trump and his officials have been taking a hardline stance against Beijing.

In an interview with CBS News before his conference, Mr Trump said “Look, we made a great trade deal — was done, the ink wasn’t even dry, and they hit us with the plague.

“So right now, I’m not interested in talking to China about another deal.

“I’m interested in doing other things with China.”

In January, China and the US passed phase one of a trade deal that boosted food and farming exports between the two countries.

Mr Trump also announced sanctions against China for attacking Hong Kong’s freedoms with a new security law at the briefing.

The security law was passed by the Chinese Communist Party last week, and allows them to extradite political opponents in the city.

Mr Trump also announced an executive order that ended US preferential treatment towards Hong Kong.

Ending Hong Kong’s special status means it will now be “treated the same as mainland China”, according to Mr Trump.

He added: "No special privileges, no special economic treatment and no export of sensitive technology.”

The president also lashed out at assumed Democrat nominee Joe Biden at the press briefing.

Mr Trump called his 2020 election rival’s career “a gift to the Chinese Communist Party”, and has been “devastating for the American worker”.

He added: “Biden expressed more fawning praise about China on an ordinary day than about America.”

Mr Trump also quoted Biden saying recently that the US has “never lived up to” its founding ideals.
