Nigerians are generally religious by nature. A significant proportion of the population is affiliated with one of the two major religions. Few who claim not to believe in God are seen as strange.




Our religious inclinations make us hold religious leaders in very high esteem and we tend to take in whatever they say as direct from the almighty. Even the idolators refer to the chief priest as the mouthpiece of the gods.




Over the years, I have been so intrigued by the power of religion. Religion is about the only thing I know that can make a professor of mathematics declare 1+1 is 11 and willing to stake his life to defend it.




While our religious inclinations have its pros, especially in regulating character, a major downside is the exploitation of gullible followers by mischievous leaders who sadly seem to be multiplying daily.




Religious leadership is not regulated, anyone can decide to call himself Pastor and with the right skills, can grow followership  over some time.




It's important to identify some characteristic of a fake Pastor,




1. Questionable wealth- One of the major challenges of our society is that we do not question wealth. A wealthy pastor is not synonymous with fake but there most be a correlation between his wealth and his work. Pastor's wealth can come from well-paid employment or legit business in the case of a bi-vocational pastor. This is very much in order. If however, his flamboyant lifestyle is questionable or at the expense of his congregation, then that's a red flag
