I met John at the training ground on a Saturday morning. After the game, he walked me to his car and told me about an accident he was involved in the previous day. I noticed an indifference when he said, "the useless bike man took off the mirror on my passenger side. I know what it cost me to replace the damaged one." I felt pity for him knowing that he invested a fortune in acquiring that car just the previous month. He went further to tell me it happened at a turn, but he insisted the biker was at fault for not paying attention to his pointer, in spite of my effort to make him think otherwise.
"Expect the new one to be broken soon. I advise you to get a spare in readiness", I said as I walked away. I saw the shock on his face but I didn't wait to get a reaction. One week after, I bumped into his wife at a mall but I was greeted with, "Arinze, it happened again- your friend lost his passenger side mirror yet again. The same side and in a similar circumstance." With a self-satisfied smirk, I responded, "Tell him to see me, the Wizard of Oz, if he doesn't want another accident to happen."
First thing Sunday morning he was at my door. He was still standing when he asked, " what is this wizardry all about?" I offered him a sit before taking him through the lecture.

REFLECTION
I told him making mistakes is a normal part of life that offers a route for firsthand learning. Mistakes put a burden on someone and it is this burden that drives one into challenging the status quo. It resets your mindset into a fact-finding mode. You would begin to query what happened, how it happened and why it happened. It is at this level that the learning process becomes activated.
"The flip side is what happened to you. When you deny or try to justify a mistake, you lose the burden and the lesson that comes with it. When you blame the other person or lie, to make yourself feel exonerated, you still lose the burden", I said. He moved closer to the edge of the sofa with that look of 'tell me more' on his face.
I paused before I continued, " if you had taken responsibility the first time, there wouldn't have been the second. The moment you shifted blame, I knew the second one was just a few days away because you wouldn't get the lesson."
I concluded, "if the pointer was all that is necessary, we won't need the side mirror on vehicles. Next time, ensure you watch through the side mirror before you take a turn, irrespective of your pointer indicating an intent to move towards a particular direction. This is the lesson you missed by not taking the burden of accepting responsibility when mistakes are made."
Unsuccessful people blame the other person. They expect the other person to change while they remain the same; therein lies the biggest barrier to learning.
