Has your social media marketing tactics ever gotten to the point where it frustrates you and you just wanna swear off social media networking for life? Like you just go all “This is it, I am so done with this!”

The complaint rate of how social media marketing can be frustrating and doesn’t yield fast result especially for professional service is on an all-time high.

Usually, when people make such comments, have a quiet little look at what they are doing on social media, and it seems pretty obvious why social as a marketing strategy gets frustrating. In descending order of importance:


Social media marketing gets frustrating when there is no clear marketing strategy
Social media marketing can be frustrating just as much as any other form of marketing which is shabbily done. We could just as easily replace the term “social media” with “print advertising”….as that would suck just as much in terms of “working” if the same mistakes were being made.
Now, the problem is not with the social media medium but with the business using the social medium. That is what gets frustrating at marketing.
When there is no clear definition about what your business is trying to achieve with its marketing there is typically a mismatch between expectations and actual behavior. For example: when a business says “we must use social because everyone says it is the in thing in marketing” (or words to that effect), there is an inherent expectation that this will help drive new business opportunities to the practice. It must do, because that is what marketing does, right?
But then the business spends all of its efforts on the social media channels doing brand positioning and brand promotion. The marketing behavior of the business is not consistent with their expectations – they are not doing things with social media that will create immediate opportunities but are instead engaging in activities which may create greater confidence in their brand over the longer term.
In this example, the social media strategy is bound to get frustrating.

Social media marketing gets frustrating when it is a marketing tactic used in isolation
Alternatively, a business sets up social media channels and perhaps even puts some really good engaging stuff on them. But then doesn’t promote those channels and let the world know that they exist. Always remember that your prospects do not spend their evenings trawling around the Facebook pages of as many accounting practices as they can, or reading LinkedIn profiles of as many financial planners as they can, or even viewing Instagram profiles of as many fashion and beauty brands as they can simply with a view to trying to find the perfect one.
You have to do some things to drive people towards these marketing channels. Just putting them out there as an isolated tactic will lead to disappointing results. At the very least, a firm needs to put about as much effort into getting their SEO right as they do in getting their social media right, because search is the number 1 tool for driving prospective clients (being people who are actively looking for the sort of service you provide) to your social media channels.


Social media marketing gets frustrating when you aren’t making an effort to connect with people
The third major reason why social media marketing can get frustrating for a firm is that the communication is a one way street. The firm is putting out stuff for people to read maybe, but that is about it. Too much generic one-size-fits-all bland content that is delivered one way with no actual interaction prospective clients kills a brand social presence. Trust when we say your prospects do not want to see unending pictures and statements about buying more exotic cars, expensive jewelries or vacationing in expensive places. They don’t want to be reminded to spend their money, they would rather you keep them informed of opportunities where they can get more value for less. Another is repetition; people don’t want to read the same wording over and over again.

Social media marketing gets really frustrating when it is a constant blatant promotion of you and your business
While there is absolutely nothing wrong with using social media for a bit of a plug here or there for the business – you are trying to market the business after all and prospects get that and are largely okay with it – it is about balancing the content mix. It really is a fairly small proportion of the population who tune into the infomercial channels every day for their entertainment or education….the overwhelming majority of the population do not consider constant advertising to be either entertaining or informative.

Social media marketing gets also frustrating when you don’t understand data
One of the biggest potential weaknesses in any social media marketing strategy is failing to understand the data. If you can’t measure, analyze and react to the data created by your social activities, you’re essentially flying blind. While you’re at it, you also need to invest time in understanding attribution models. The theoretical consumer process of ‘see post’, ‘click link’ and ‘buy product’ almost never happens. Consumers tend to bounce around before they purchase, and by not understanding the data behind how your audience shops, you may misinterpret the effectiveness of your campaigns. Get familiar with Facebook Insights, Facebook Analytics and Google Analytics so you fully understand exactly what your efforts are producing. Success with social media marketing isn’t only about Likes, engagements and shares – in fact, these stats alone are largely irrelevant to your broader business goals.

In today’s digital world social media can be the most effective marketing tactic – or it can be a really frustrating marketing strategy. The difference between the two is remembering the various elements that are needed to make it work, and then giving them all the right amount of attention.

As SEO is how you get found online, social media is how prospects & clients decide whether to listen to you or not. Your Content is why they engage with you and remember you. You need all of them to be given the proper attention if you do want social media marketing to work for your business because “social” cannot work in isolation. Not in any sense of the word can “social” be something which is done alone, can it?
