Lingo Africa, the foremost human capital development platform in Nigeria recently got into conversation with some of our clients on the subject of when they resigned from their jobs too quickly, only to discover they had made a mistake.

I had just been reconnected to an old schoolmate of mine who promised to hook me up to a juicy job within the civil service, says Collins, one of our clients from Nigeria.

“I was excited because I wanted to leave the job I had at the time, due to the fact that I was spending so much time away from my family. I desperately wanted a change and I didn’t think logically.

“I trusted my friend so much and in the end, it all turned out to be a scam. But, by then, I had already resigned from my job. I have learnt from my mistakes”, Collins said.

“In 2015, I received an interview invite after applying to a job, while still working at my old office. The interview was successful and immediately I got back home, I thought I already had the job and sent in a notice at my old office.

“Two weeks later, I got an email saying that I should resume the following week, however, the day I resumed, I was told that the email was sent in error and it was meant for someone else. I had already quit my old job, it was too late for me to return there, so, I ended up having no job,” says Becky, our client from Kenya.

A company offered me a job. I was working at another company at the time, but was not well paid. So, when I got the offer, I jumped at it. Some friends advised me to do a background check on the company before accepting, but I needed more money, so I took the offer and resigned from my old job,” says Jean, from Ghana.

“It was only after resuming in the new office that I realized it was a toxic workplace. The culture was mostly low employee engagement, zero empathy and lots of cliques. I became depressed, the money was good but couldn’t make up for the security I had at my former workplace. I learnt a hard lesson,” Jean concluded.

These three people resigned from their jobs too early and learnt hard lessons in the process. Hopefully, these stories help people out there from making wrong decisions when it comes to career changes.

Thank you brother, that was Some years back. I quit my job with MTN CCR to get another job with a telecom infrastructure company with every assurance that I will get the job. To cut long story short, after my training with this new company (A training I paid 100k to attend) they had issue with their major contractors that led to lawsuits in which the company I was meant to be employed lost and have to pay back heavy sums back to the infrastructure owners. This led to retrenchment and I never had that new job and have lost my old job. If it’s presently that one has family maybe I don’t know how it would have been. Then some days I have to eat sometimes once in a day. I was without job for close to eight months, no food, no transportation fare, no nothing and eventually my serious date showed her true colors. I thank God for the level I am in today. Though I want to switch job presently but I am being very very careful not to repeat that experience. Bottom line is “I will not wish my enemy what I experienced during those trying times” quote author=AbdulAkpan post=92116040]
