Charlie Jones said that we will never be better if we do not read books and meet people. As humans, we are who we are because of whom we have. In other words, you are an average of about five closest people to you. But what kinds of people do you need to have in your life?

In this article, I’ll be sharing with you 5 types of people you need in your life if you want to be successful.

1 People who challenge you
If we are allowed, we will all be lazy and useless. We all enjoy our comfort zone because there is a good measure of peace in the comfort zone. But you cannot be a hero by living in peace. To win, you have to fight. That often means going out of your ease to areas that are harsh and even uncertain to confront life’s challenges, pursuing your dreams even when it is very difficult to do. To really do this, you need people in your life who can keep you on your toes, people who can make you wake up early and sleep late. People who will ask you why you do the things you do the way you do them. These people may be friends who are as well crazy about getting things done or colleagues who are different from everyone else. So make friends with such people who challenge you and push you off your comfort zone. Be grateful for such ones.

2 People who teach you
Because we have very limited knowledge about life in most things, it’s wise to tap knowledge from people who have gone ahead of us. These may be mentors, teachers, or consultants.



To be successful, you must know what most people in your generation don’t know. You need to be inquisitive and ask questions to do this. You don’t necessarily need to have a physical mentor or a teacher; you just have to be studious and read the types of books people in your generation don’t like to read. Especially in this age of social media, you can easily become the best student of anyone without leaving your room. So to be successful, you must know a lot of things most people don’t know and you need some great teachers to achieve this.

3 People who believe in you
I know of a boy who when in his primary school days, he used to come home at the end of the term with a very poor result. Others will laugh at him and call him “olodo”. Yet, his mother would tell him that he is a brilliant boy. Eventually, it turns out that the boy became the best student before he left secondary school and maintained that position as the best student in his department until he graduated from university.

To succeed in life, you need people who believe in you. Some of them will verbally express their confidence in you, while others may not verbally express it but will show you by supporting your endeavors. You have to cherish such people. But the question is how can you get people to believe in you?



First, you have to understand that not so many people will believe in you no matter how much you try. If you have one or two people to affirm their trust in you, you have all you may ever get. You need to be trustworthy to earn trust. Trust is like income. You work to earn income, be it salary or wages or profits. If you don’t work hard to earn people’s trust, no one will believe you will scale through huddles to be successful. That means you won’t get the morale you need.

4 People who doubt you
If you have a dream and strive to actualize it, you will definitely have people that will doubt your ability to succeed. Doubters are a blessing in disguise. But how are these people designated for your success in life?



Well, some people say whenever someone tells them that they will never make it, they get inspired and go the extra mile because they want to prove their doubters wrong. You know how you feel when you want to prove someone wrong, don’t you? That is the inspiration you get when you are told you won’t make it. The spirit is great; it can motivate you to climb the highest mountain; ford through marshy lakes; navigate through stormy seas and conquer the world. You really need doubters. But how can you get such people?



Well, you really don’t have to do anything because the world is filled with many doubters. Some are in your family, in your neighborhood, in your class, and among your friends. All you have to do is share your dreams with the; step back and listen or watch their body language. Some will be bold enough to tell you that you are crazy and that your dream will never become a reality, or that your plan will never work. They will laugh at you, or even abuse you. Others will do so with their body language.



When you get doubters to doubt you, you should record their voice in your head and replay it in your mind a thousand times every day. And each time you remember those doubters, you should tell yourself, “Guy, I really need to prove these people wrong”. There’s nothing else that is as motivating as this.

5 People who are willing to go with you
So many people live their lives all by themselves. They make their money by themselves and pursue their dreams all by themselves. Such people are perfectionists and they think the inputs of others are not right or good enough. Their greatest pride is in doing things right all by themselves. This is wrong because man is a social creature. And we learn a lot from others.

Your pride should not be in doing something right all by yourself. Your greatest pride should be in doing it fast. You can always get better later. But it has to be done now and fast. Don’t be a lone ranger. Ask for help; form alliances; strike partnership deals; employ others; build a team, and don’t just go alone.



John Maxwell said: “one is too small a number to achieve greatness.” You must be willing to get others to partner with you, cooperate with you, and make sacrifices with you.
