BREAKING NEWS: Hosni Mubarak resigns

The Egyptian President, Mr. Hosni Mubarak

The embattled Hosni Mubarak has resigned as president of Egypt.



He stepped down on Friday after ruling the country for more than 30 years.



Vice President Omar Suleiman while announcing Mubarak’s decision to step down on the state television says the country’s Army Council will take over from the former president.



The announcement was monitored by the Cable News Network.



Earlier today, witnesses told the Reuters that at least two helicopters took off from Mubarak‘s presidential palace in Cairo.



The report quoting the witnesses says he was heading to the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

CAIRO (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of Egyptian protesters waved flags, cried, cheered and embraced in celebration on Friday when the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak was announced.

"The people have brought down the regime," chanted the crowds in Tahrir Square.

No Army/Battalion can stop a people whose time has come!
