When actively applying for jobs, the recruiter might ask for either a CV or a resume from you to assess and determine whether you are a great fit for the role the company or organization wants to fill. You should bear in mind that the length of your CV/resume matters a lot.

When considering the length of your CV, you must first of all, take into consideration, the requirements of the role you are applying for. What is the company/organization asking for? When you understand this, it is easier to decide whether to send a CV/resume.

Like we have explained previously, a CV is a longer document that shows all the details of your professional experience, while a resume is a shorter document showing your experience as it relates to the role you are applying for.

Now, we always advice our clients to employ caution when sending CV/resume. Recruiters will mostly use about ten seconds to review a CV/resume, and in cases where the Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is used, keywords that are related to the role, will be the guide for the ATS.

So, how long should your CV/resume be? There is a determinant for this that works for us at Lingo Africa. Any of your work experiences that is related to the role in question, should be highlighted. Any work experience or skill that is not related to the role you are applying for, should be left out. This way, you can have a relevant CV/resume.

Creating a high-impact and relevant CV/resume is something that a lot of professionals do not know how to do. They get distracted by repetition of words in an attempt to impress the recruiter. At the end of the day, they end up sending an excessively long document that will end up being trashed by the recruiter.

When you are creating a CV/resume to send for a job application, please, make sure you rewrite, and edit as often as possible. Reading aloud will help you discover words and sentences that should be replaced or deleted.
