Voting is one of the critical ways individuals influence government decisions. For eligibility to vote, an individual is expected to have attained a certain age. Consequently, the minimum voting age in Nigeria has been placed at age 18. Some believe that persons aged 18 have developed close ties within their community because they have lived in the neighbourhood for years. Thus, they should be able to decide whom to vote. However, many opine that at 18, an individual may not be able to make sound judgements in matters relating to governance. Hence, the minimum required voting age should be raised beyond 18.
Contrarily, some argue that the age limit should be lowered to age 16 because voting at an early age awakens and gives people a sense of responsibility. Besides, a voter makes choices congruent with available positions.
Meanwhile, universal suffrage is the right of all adult citizens to vote. In Nigeria, this was first practised in 1979 following women's participation in the elections. So, putting an age restriction on voters is disenfranchising a part of the citizenry.
Subsequently, organised groups have asked repeatedly, Does age determine maturity? Is the age of a voter a means to get their choice influenced? What enables one form a good opinion of a candidate? What voting age is ideal?
Undoubtedly, the opinion that women or that a certain age group lack the knowledge or maturity to vote, or that people who do not own land should not vote has hindered their fundamental human rights throughout history and should not be encouraged.
Lastly, true democracy relies on a voter’s ability to make informed decisions to elect credible persons to political offices. Not forgetting politics is a game of numbers. Hence, as much as possible everyone should be given a chance to vote.
