Agriculture and economic development in Nigeria

Development implies complete modernization of a society. As much we have to be clear in defining development, so as no to limit our definition in terms of economic growth only, development encompasses the modernization of a peasant society into an industrial one. It generally transforms the whole way of life and the physical environment of daily life itself. Generally, it is now fully accepted that development has political, social and economic implications.

The importance of agriculture in the development of the Nigerian economy


Apart from the provision of foodstuff for the teaming population, agriculture helps in the exportation of primary commodities which enhances our foreign exchange earnings which can be used in financing other development projects. With the increase in other economic activities and the advancement of science and technology, agriculture can release more labour force for the development of the economy. Agricultural development can increase total tax revenue as well as having importance towards intersectoral trade. The savings generated from capital formation can be used for further development purposes; increased rural income may generate additional demand for industrial products. The needs for agricultural sector could influence the need for additional infrastructures indispensable for economic development.
