Lesson 1.
What we need to do when we buy a land ?
*Before purchasing a land what are the little things we need to take into consideration?
* What type of building are you going for ( i.e detached buildings or terraced buildings)

I hope we will be able to learn from what am about to start with today. we will be talking about lands and their sizes and we might add prices of how they are being sold in Lagos or around other states .
A land can be said to be the part of the earth's surface that is not covered by water.
Lands are sold in plots, acres and hectares.
PLOT
plot is a marked out piece of Land for the purpose of building or farming. The size of a plot can vary for different reasons but according to Nigeria's land division, the appropriate plot for a house construction is 50 x 100ft which can accommodate a standard house with a small compound.
ACRES
An Acre consist of 6 plots. The measurement in sqm is a total of 4,046sqm.
HECTARES
A Hectare consist of 15 plots. the measurement is 10000sqm

we have been moving gradual about building constructions and I will love to explain everything in details staring from
1) the land needed i.e the sizes .
2) materials needed I.e blocks, concrete, steel reinforcement, woods
3) understanding drawings and identifying how you can understand it.
4) how supervision works
5) finishes i.e painting, tiling e.t.c.
6) quantity surveying
Earlier I wrote about lands where be talked about what arces, plots and hectares means.

Lets talk about BLOCKS. Many at times ]people do ask me these questions . why hollow blocks and why dont we use the ones without holes. Feel free to tell us but on this thread I will explain more and shed more light on it.
Concrete blocks, cement blocks, come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes. They are made out of a mixture of Portland cement, sand, gravel and water. When the mixture is wet it is paste-like and can be cast into the form of the block. When it dries, it hardens until it becomes like stone. Generally speaking, there are two kinds of concrete block, hollow and solid.
Hollow Blocks
Hollow concrete blocks have one or more hollow cores. These cores reduce the total cross-sectional area of the block by at least 25 percent. In general, a hollow-core concrete block is more than 50 percent solid. Standard hollow concrete blocks come in full and half sizes. Full-size blocks are rectangular and have two cores. Half size blocks are cubical and have one core.
Solid Blocks
Contrary to what their name indicates, solid concrete blocks are not necessarily solid. They are merely less hollow than the blocks that are normally called hollow. Solid blocks have core holes that take up less than 25 percent of the cross-sectional area of the block.
Differences
Hollow blocks are often used to build large structures like boundary fences. The reduced volume of concrete used to make each block adds up to a significant savings in cost for the materials for the whole wall. The hollow cores also give adequate room to place reinforcing materials like steel bars if the design calls for reinforcing. Sometimes water pipes or electrical conduits are run through them. while solid blocks are used where holes isnt needed and it is more heavy .
2) The heat preservation effect of the hollow shale block walls is 3.16 times higher than that of traditional clay brick walls, 3.11 times higher than that of concrete block walls, and 1.69 times higher than that of recycled concrete blocks walls.
if you have more to add please add more . thank you for reading

Good morning everyone, Lets talk about steel reinforcement.
Steel Reinforcement is a steel bar or mesh of steel wires used as a tension device in reinforced concrete and reinforced masonry structures to strengthen and aid the concrete under tension. we have different types of steel reinforcement ranging from 8mm to 25mm. Each of these types has its own functions.
Its should be noted that for stirrups steel reinforcement used ranges from 8mm to 10mm.
we have majorly two type of steel reinforcement
1) Mild steel ; These are plain bars and have no ribs on them. These are used in small projects where economy is the real concern. As plain bars cannot bind very well with concrete hence hooks have to be provided at the ends. it is mostly denoted with letter "R".Typical tensile yield strength is 40,000 psi.
2) High steel: This is the most common type of reinforcement for regular RCC structures. Hot rolling is done in the mills which involves giving it deformations on the surface i.e. ribs so that it can form bond with concrete. It has typical tensile yield strength of 60,000 psi.
In conclusion, steels are always needed in concrete in order to increase the strength of concrete. In our next page we will talk about concrete.

Good morning everyone, Lets talk about materials used generally in construction. please note I might not mention every instrument and you can also had yours
1) Builders line : used for making long straight lines along relatively flat surface
2) Builder squares: used where wall or blocks meet to get a perfect angle . It is also used where carpenters wood meets at an angle to check if its at a good angle.
3) hammers and chisels
4) markers : for indicating a particular point
5) Automatic level instrument or dumpy level: it is used to take level and tranfer level on a surface (foundation surface , floor surfaces ). it can also be used to transfer the same level from one point to the other.
6) water level: its one of the oldest tools and easy tools to use to transfer level from one point to another. please you can watch this and see how it is done.

Good day everyone , On todays episode we will be talking about CONCRETE MIX RATIO.
we will be breaking it down so anybody can understand what we are talking about .
what is concret mix ratio: concrete mix ratios are the proportions of concrete components such as cement, sand, aggregates and water. These mix ratios are decided based on type of construction and mix designs. However, building codes provides nominal and standard concrete mix ratios for various construction works based on experience and testing.
We have different types of mix ratio ranging from
M15 : 1;3;6
M20 : 1:2:4
M25 : 1:1.5:3.
These are the common and widely used mixed ratio ranging from a normal bungalow to a 4 storey building and you should also note that designs ratio are ben specified by the structural Engineer.
Lets explain in detail M15 stands for grade 15 concrete and it is gotten by adding 1 head pan of cement , 3 head pan of sharp sand and 6 head pan of granite.
M20 means 1 head pan of cement ,2 head pan of sharp sand and 4 head pan of granite.
From the explanation I hope you have a litle idea about what we mean by grade of concret or concrete mix ratio.
Note ; for more info you can reach me my sending a mail to aruokhai.micheal@gmail.com or on instagram: constructionthoughts. Stay tuned i will open everything about building gradually

Good morning everyone , Its been a while have been here sorry for the delay in my continous write up about building construction.
Lets talk about " HOW IMPORTANT IS THE STRUCTURAL DRAWING TO A PROJECT"
For so long we often hear people say this word "forget about engineers it will stand or you hear people say is it not 2 storey building"
The truth of the story is it will stand after you use your ideas but for how long will it stand that is the most important question? please always remember :
* The price of materials then isnt the price of materials now and it is one reason you should take into consideration if you have such mindset because there was easy assess to such materials then than now .
* Another factor you keep to mind is how well do you understand the soil you want to build your foundation on.
* what will it cost you to seek guidance from a civil Engineer or get a structural drawing done to avoid stories that touch the heart.
Finally i will like to advice you on this its better to get it right at the onset than trying to look for a way out when the mistake is done . "please save a life and spread this information".
In my next talk I will be talking about "shuttering in construction".
