Over the years, people and scientists have been searching for the best and effective anti-malaria drug(s). Malaria, caused by the parasites claims thousands of lives annually and this has made it to draw global attention.

Actually, malaria is getting harder to treat these days with recent development of artemisinin-resistant strain of the parasite that causes malaria been identified by scientists in Rwanda. But artemisinin-resistant strain was first recorded in 2008 in South East Asia.

What Is Really Malaria?

Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by a parasite that commonly infects a certain type of mosquito (female Anopheles mosquitoes) which feeds on humans. People who get malaria are typically very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness.

There are four kinds of malaria parasites that infect humans: Plasmodium falciparum, P. vivax, P. ovale, and P. malariae. In addition, P. knowlesi, a type of malaria that naturally infects macaques in Southeast Asia, also infects humans, causing malaria that is transmitted from animal to human (“zoonotic” malaria).

P. falciparum is the type of malaria that is most likely to result in severe infections and if not promptly treated, may lead to death. Although malaria can be a deadly disease, illness and death from malaria can usually be prevented.

Evolution Of Parasites

In a journal article, scientists warned that malaria parasites that developed a resistance to previous drugs are “suspected to have contributed to millions of additional malaria deaths in young African children in the 1980s”.
When the first malaria drug, Chloroquine, was developed, researchers thought that the disease would be eradicated within years. But since the 1950s the parasites have evolved to develop resistance to successive drugs.

However, malaria infection is now commonly treated with a combination of two drugs – artemisinin and piperaquine.
