The Senate on Thursday heeded the pleas of President Goodluck Jonathan and passed the Anti-terrorism Bill 2010, retaining the clause to put to death terrorists, whose acts resulted in loss of life.It took three reminders from President Jonathan to the National Assembly for the legislators to accede to his request.

The bill stipulates a maximum sentence of twenty years imprisonment or death penalty if there is a loss of life in any terrorist act.

The bill outlaws actions of individuals or groups that can be likened to terrorism, including kidnapping, oil bunkering and piracy and plane hijacks.

The bill also describes terrorism acts as attacks on persons, which may cause bodily harm, destruction of government or public facilities, including information system that is likely to endanger human life or result in major economic loss to the government.

It also covers possession or use of explosives as well as research into the development of explosives – including biological and chemical without lawful authority.

Offenders risk a maximum of 10 years imprisonment if they are found guilty of involvement in training potential terrorists, passing or withholding terrorist information, aiding or harbouring terrorist and funding terrorist activities.
