THE SECRETS TO GETTING A JOB

4 Important Things to Know Before Applying For that Job

A review of the present global economic situation reveals that there are more job seekers than openings. This is no news. The struggle for employment is no longer just a battle of wits, but closer to tooth and nail. With over a thousand applicants responding to every job advert, we all know how important it is to win the attention of the recruiter.
But just before you send in that application, there are a few salient things you need to know:

1. How qualified am I?
A lot of recruiters are put off by series of disqualified applications. It can be a rather daunting task to wade through hundreds of emails searching for a qualified candidate. As an applicant, one thing you do not want to do is to get your CV starred as a negative. Always try to limit your applications to jobs for which you are qualified. If you are not suited for a job advert, be patient; your ideal role would be required in due time. In the mean time, you may take other professional courses (online, part time and even free courses) to improve your qualifications.

2. What do I have to Offer?
This can also be rephrased as: what experience do I have? Even if you are a fresh graduate, you might think you do not have any experience but your ability to sell yourself could give you an edge over your contemporaries. You have to be able to convince the recruiter that you have what they are looking for! Also, knowing your worth influences your remuneration bargain. Shhh!

3. What do I know about the Company?
Before applying for any job, it is best to know more about the company. Do a research either on your own or ask people who know more about them to assist you. This will ensure that your application is in line with what the recruiter wants. An applicant who researches has an edge over others.
4. Why do I want to take this job?
You have to decide why you want to take the role. Is it for financial reasons, the career prospect/challenge, proximity to your residence etc. You also have to decide if the timing is right for a shift in employment. Career choices have to be properly decided and strategically arranged. Millenials are known to have short-term employment records, but this does not have to be erratic. If you recently changed companies, it would be advisable to let a reasonable time go by before the next employment pursuit.
