MULTI-BILLIONAIRE Jeff Bezos[i][/i], who is currently the richest man in the world with a net-worth of $200bn, first registered Amazon as a company 25 years ago today – and grew the business to a trillion-dollar valuation just last year.
But Amazon's beginnings were far more humble: a simple digital bookstore operating out of a small garage in Washington. Bezos had created a list of 20 products that could be marketed online, and then trimmed it down to five products: CDs, computer gear, software, videos and books, but books became the top choice, and Amazon launched as an online store.
On why he chose book, Bezos said, “I knew I was going to sell a lot of things, but there are more varieties of books in the world than anything else. Plus endless knowledge are buried inside books. Computers makes you smart, but books makes you smarter”.
Bezos, now 55, was born in New Mexico and graduated from Princeton in 1986 with degrees in electrical engineering and computer science.
