The first coup which ended the First Republic was widely welcomed by the country as a relief from the chaos and corruption of the civilian regime.

But before long many people became concerned about the way things were going.

In the North, particularly, many people were bitter that their two chief political leaders has been killed whereas neither of the two Igbo premiers was.

The coup had also claimed the lives of a Western Premier and a Mid-Western Federal Minister.

Again, whereas some high ranking northern army officers had been killed only one Igbo senior officer met that fate.......
