Premier League Weekend Review by CapstoneSP(m): 4:22pm On Feb 28, 2011
We witnessed some high scoring games in the Premier League this weekend. Manchester United defeated Wigan 4-0 which takes their winning streak to 12 games unbeaten against Wigan. Wolverhampton Wanderers beat Blackpool 4-0, crushing Blackpool’s confidence on the back of their mid-week win against Tottenham. In the final four goal thriller of the weekend it ended 4-1 to Aston Villa in the home tie against Blackburn Rovers. Elsewhere Manchester City drew at home to Fulham, West Ham beat Liverpool and Everton beat Sunderland 2-0. Newcastle drew against Bolton with Kevin Nolan scoring a great header against his old club.

Manchester United went four points clear at the top of the league this weekend after yet another goal fest against Wigan. The last game between these two clubs ended 5-0 to United, so all the travelling fans were expecting goals a plenty. Ferguson rested a few key players but chose to start Rooney and Hernandez together up front. Hernandez has scored in almost every game he has played in this season and Saturday was no different. He laced two on the day thanks to smart passing from Rooney and Nani. The start of the match was tarnished with some bad sportsmanship by Rooney, after he launched a vicious elbow onto James McCarthy. The attack was completely unprovoked but will not go unnoticed by the FA. Rooney eventually scored in the tie thanks to a great cross from Berbatov but the result was most definitely over shadowed by the elbowing. Fabio completed the drubbing late on after he finished a cross from Fletcher that went unnoticed by the Wigan back line.

Manchester City finished ten points adrift of Manchester United last night, which could signal the end of their title push. Mark Hughes took his Fulham side back to the scene of his accident as Manchester City manager, a tough place to go and get any points! But Hughes exacted his revenge and managed to walk away with one point, thanks to a great equaliser by Damien Duff in the second half of the game. Mario Balotelli hit a screamer into the net and took advantage of a rare start by putting Man City 1-0 up, but Mancini believes the player must improve considerably in order to start. Hughes suggested that Mancini was not looking at him during the handshake at the end of the game, firing Hughes into a handshake rage!

Aston Villa fans experienced a half of no goals before a second half goal fiesta. They moved five points clear of the relegation zone thanks to a 4-1 win over Blackburn. Young and Bent linked well during the match up but Bent failed to score. Young on the other hand managed to hit two goals and looked on fire. Aston Villa are not a bottom of the half team, so it wouldn’t surprise us if Houllier marched them into a more comfortable position in the league. Nikola Kalinic scored a late goal for Blackburn after his shot deflected off Richard Dunne and looped over Brad Friedel.

Saturday’s 4-0 victory over Blackpool took Wolves out of the Premier League relegation zone on goal difference. McCarthy is refusing to read any significance into the latest league position as he would rather work towards the next game and focus on the present. Wolves face Tottenham at home next weekend and the result is pivotal to both sides at either end of the table. On loan Spurs player Jamie O’Hara has impressed for Wolves lately and scored for them at the weekend, he has conceided that his return to Tottenham in the summer is unlikely.

Scott Parker put in a great display for West Ham at the weekend scoring a goal that contributed to his side beating Liverpool 3-1 at home. Considering he could not walk 24 hours before the game it was somewhat of a miracle. Some intense treatment and a pain killing injection enabled the midfielder to feature in the game. Glen Johnsen scored against his old side but Carlton Cole added the finishing touches to a great win for the Hammers.

Elsewhere Newcastle drew at home to Bolton thanks to goals from Kevin Nolan and Daniel Sturridge. Everton beat Sunderland 2-0 with all credit going to Jermaine Beckford for the brace and Arsenal lost in the Carling Cup final to Birmingham (see our write up on the football news page!)

Here are the results in full:

Aston Villa 4-1 Blackburn
Everton 2-0 Sunderland
Newcastle 1-1 Bolton
Wigan 0-4 Man Utd
Wolves 4-0 Blackpool
Man City 1-1 Fulham
West Ham 3-1 Liverpool
