Greetings my great people of N. L. I'm currently 20 and will be 21 by this December. At my age i still doesn't have any skill due to circumstances. But I have decided to dive into the field of I. T. I wish to learn coding to become a competent web developer and after I'm done with that I will go into mobile app development. But my problems are these: 1. As someone that aspires to become a professional web developer one day, which language do I start with since they're numerous programming languages out there? 2. Since I don't have the money to enroll in some I T institution such as (NIIT, APTECH) which only platform do you suggest I start from? (If you have any YouTube channel that I can watch tutorials from pls do suggest) 3. I really lack motivation to kickstart, I have nobody to support or encourage me, at times I just feel like giving-up on programming. Some of the comments I saw in this programming section is really discouraging for beginners like me. If you have any book or video that can motivate beginners like me on how prepare for the life of a programmer pls do share. I'm still trying to gather money for my P. C. I'd love to read your helpful suggestions on the comment section. |

It depends but if your purpose is to get a job as a programmer and earn money learn JavaScript. Take this route HTML, CSS, JavaScript. Learn one framework. If a big company is your goal learn angular. If a small to medium company is your goal learn React. For backend, I would advise you to learn PHP especially if your goal is to make money. Nodejs is great but beyond the hype there's not much jobs out there for Nodejs like that. If a big company is your goal, then learn java or c# for backend. Pick up mysql or mongodb. You don't have to be an expert at both of them though. You can learn everything by yourself online via YouTube or udemy. Happy coding. Also pick up data structures and algorithms. You will need the knowledge to pass programming interviews. The book grokking algorithms explains this concept pretty well after that leetcode like a mad man. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Heartlessbanker:Because it's the easiest to get a job. There's other aspects of computer science but they aren't as easy to get into like that. Cybersecurity is also there. I think with knowledge of JavaScript and python and some IT certifications one can get an entry level cybersecurity job. Embedded systems has a very high learning curve. Even the Arduino kit to play with it isn't cheap. Game development is also not cheap. You need a very very powerful laptop. Most people learning to code can't even afford up to 100k laptops. Another thing is the market. How many game development jobs are there? How many cybersecurity jobs are there. If you go on indeed and LinkedIn and most job sites and type in software engineer. 8 out of 10 jobs are related to web development. Plus it's also really easy to transition to other aspects of computer science from web development except embedded systems and game development. 3 Likes |

Heartlessbanker: Tensa had a great reply. I will add that the web development route to learning programming is still a very good route even if you don't plan to become a web developer. Javascript is a language that is no more limited to web applications, so learning to code in Javascript is valuable as a programming language outside of web development. Besides, going the HTML/CSS then Javascript route is completely interesting for most beginners as you can visually appreciate what you are learning. And Javascript seems to be one of the easiest languages to pick up, when we ignore its many quirks. (Python seems to still beat JS in this regard, though) 1 Like |
