State Civil Service Job Or Multinational Company Job? Which One Is Advisable? by SeedofAbraham: 7:47am On Sep 24, 2020 |
Good morning Nairalanders, I've been having sleepless night recently as I've been confused in decision making due to the fact that I'm not well experienced about Job matters. I presently got an offer at a State Public Service with GL 8 Salary Scale of 63k+ monthly (though it's poor) but with a rest assured constant Promotion every 3 years subject to success in Promotion Exercise. There's also hope that in the next 18 years, I'll get to the Directorate levels (GL 15 - 17) where the Pay Structure seems better with Jumbo rise compared to the poor salary structure of GL 7 - 14... Meaning that I'll have to endure till then before enjoyment start coming. Please note that in addition to Promotion every 3 years, this State Public Service don't owe workers salary as they pay in due time as we all know that Public Service has Job Security. Also, I hope by God's Grace that I become a Permanent Secretary if I decide to choose this path while enduring the Salary (I can switch to Federal Parastatals if the Job Offer comes up later though). On the other hand, I'm about to get a Full time Staff offer from a Multinational Company (Headquarter is based in the US) with more than 120k Salary for a start. There's Career growth and the chance of living comfortably & enjoying life is cool compared to the State Public Service in terms of Salary. We all know that Private Organisations can decide to lay off workers at any time as there's no Job Security. Also, I don't know if Multinational Companies usually lay off only Contract Staff or they can decide to lay off Permanent Staff as well... Though, the Multinational Company have a Pension Scheme for their Staff & didn't lay off workers during this COVID-19 Pandemic as they were operating during the lockdown since they provide essential services. I wasn't born & brought up with a Silver Spoon and I never pray to struggle in life henceforth as Poverty must die. I'm a Second Class Upper graduate with proven abilities and outstanding performance as I'm a Problem Solver. I need the assistance of experienced Nairalanders as your advice and point of views with detailed explanations will be highly appreciated. 9 Likes 2 Shares |

Wow, this is my first ever FTC. Anyway I dedicate it to Ize-iyamu's defeat at the polls. Not everyone can take back to back defeats like a pro. You have now been inducted into the Hall of Fame of serial losers alongside Buhari. Op in as much as we are all tempted to recommend the multinational, but with the way the Nigerian economy is currently hitting one low after another, one wonders how long the company has before they choose to layoff staff or pack up. But let me speak like a motivational speaker. "Whenever you find yourself at crossroads, choose the path that scares you more, that's your path to greatness." 78 Likes 7 Shares |

Check out the life of staffs of the Multi national company and compare it to that of state civil service Goto to the car park and see what they drive Check their shoes and wristwatches Walk in to their offices and see who begs you for money State government jobs give you the illusion of comfort and job security, but truly when you retire you may find out you wasted your lifetime on peanut income, no gratuity , shitty pension According to your claims.. State government job pays 65k, Multi national job pays 125k .. then open a retirement savings account with Stanbic IBTC or Leadway insurance, tell them to save 60k monthly as your pension contributions and spend 65k, you can also put the 60k in mutual funds Account . 161 Likes 10 Shares |

multinational surely. civil service job is a joke. if you want to develop and stand out in the next 5-10years, take the multinational. Most civil service workers waste away time doing very little or nothing at the office all in the name of "job security". They contribute almost nothing to the organisation. Thereby also slowing down their personal growth. There is no personal or career improvement for them. they just relax. Most Nigerian civil service workers are very lazy. some of them cannot even stand shoulder-to-shoulder with a counterpart in a multinational, both in exposure and skill. Just compare their lives alone. Civil service workers will even leave their offices and go to their shops...i cry for this country...what a joke! Because they know they cant be sacked easily. Lemme tell you...if you add value to yourself(constantly), nobody can sack you. You will even be the one to be resigning and going for better pay else where. I know many friends and colleagues who changed jobs in this Covid-19 era. So choose where you want to belong bro 100 Likes 6 Shares |

If it is a state like Lagos that pays regularly, take the state civil service job and get another business to run by the side. But if it is a state like my imo state that owes three months at a stretch at times, oga, take that multinational job and prove your worth so that even if they downsize, you wont be touched. I pity my elder bro who is a civil servant in imo state. Ihedioha was doing them well for the 7 months he was as governor. Paid duly as at when. But ever since this Supreme court government called Ozodimgba mounted the saddle, it has never been the same for imo state civil servants. 12 Likes 2 Shares |

You seem to prioritize job security over possibilities and future opportunities. For someone like me there's not even one confusion I'm going for the multinational. But understandably you want job security so go civil service 36 Likes 3 Shares |

You've said it all.. We are in the same ship, I took the Multinational job with six figures and I'm good. Meanwhile, you can learn more from the Multinational company; it's like a training ground where you can be competitive and sharpen your intelligence for bigger Job opportunites but in a state job, you'll become redundant like a fhucking shittt and end up taking bribes and dealing with corrupt jackasses. My poor old parents were civil servants, I never wanna tread that way too. Anyways, Godspeed! 50 Likes 5 Shares |

Everyone will be shouting state job as if, it is a crime for him to work for few years and open his own business, from the money gotten from the multinational company. From my experience from Nysc as a corper in the state civil service. State civil service is nonsense. That you will have your time for other business is a fallacy. Bad belle everywhere. 35 Likes 1 Share |

The 2004 pension reform act mandates it that your employers must pay 7.5% while your own 7.5% would also be added making it 15%. Where my father retired, the company followed the act fully. He got all. |

I'll advise you to go for the multinational job. At least I'm speaking from experience (served with LASG and now with a multinational company) We all know in most (not all oh) state and federal jobs, staff are redundant and barely do anything at work aside eating, gisting and watching TV at work (there was this particular ministry famous for this back then ) there is a likelihood of getting too comfortable up to the point that your skills and "employability" are low compared to your colleagues in multinational companies. We all know the competitive (unhealthy??) nature of the Multinational environment which could challenge you to develop yourself and your skills. On the other side, with Civil Service job, you'l have more time on your hands for side hustle et al. In all, the decision rests with you but from experience, I'll say MULTINATIONAL! 9 Likes |

Though I have never work for anybody in my entire life but my own advice is you should go for state because is gives you garranty for life, i have an uncle that retires last year from Lagos state he was paid close to 7m this year for pension, again the way this country is going government workers are improving cos I remember many years back when there is nothing for them, if you wanna go for the other you should learn how to invest later because anything can happen. When I graduated my father advised me to go look for a government parastatal Job, his reason is that pension is guaranteed. I wanted a job where my take home can give me a comfortable life, I opted for a bank job. The advantage of pension which the civil service boast of before is no longer there, the Pension reform of 2004 make pension available to everybody, infact the private sector workers have a better advantage where pension is concern because their contribution is bigger and they remit your contribution promptly, most government offices do not remit pension fund deductions, some deduct and only remit the employee contribution and do not remit the employer contribution(and that is higher), you see, the pension advantage has shifted from the public sector to the private sector. Working in the government parastatal, I can tell you that if you are able to buy a tokunbo car within the next 10 years, then you must have stolen the money, go to government secretariat, most of them who park cars there can't afford to buy it with their earnings, they stole the money from illegal deals, bribery, ghost workers on payroll and all sort of things. In the multinational, you can live a comfortable life without touching anybody's money, you can buy your car with your money or take a loan and pay back with your earnings. My brother, me, I will not think twice about this matter, I cannot choose a government job over multinational at the entry level, at top level, yes. 24 Likes 2 Shares |
