The Vice-President, Prof Yemi Osinbajo, has said the Federal Government may reopen the land borders soon.

The President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), had in October 2019 ordered the closure of the borders to check the menace of smuggling goods and arms and ammunition into the country and protect local businesses. The closure was, however, greeted by mixed reactions from professional organisations, economists and individuals

Heads of countries like Ghana and Benin Republic had also appealed to the President to reconsider the closure, but the President maintained that the borders would remain closed until the final report of the committee set up on the matter was considered. He added that neighbouring countries must also show commitment to curtailing smuggling from their ends.

Meanwhile, Osinbajo, responding to a question on the continued closure of the land borders especially at a time the African Continental Free Trade Agreement is being prepped for take-off, said on Thursday that the government was working with neighbouring countries on the terms of reopening the border.

Osinbajo, who spoke during a webinar organised by The Africa Report, themed, ‘Bouncing back: Nigeria’s post-pandemic recovery plan’, stated, “We are working with our neighbours to see on what terms we would reopen those borders. At the moment, we are undertaking joint border patrols to control smuggling along the borders and we think it is working and I’m sure that soon enough we should have the borders opened.

“We are committed to the AfCFTA but we are concerned about threats to security and the economy and we had to take certain actions that would satisfy the immediate needs of our country. It (border closure) certainly wasn’t meant to be permanent and we are looking forward to reopening as quickly as possible.”

What difference has it made since the closure other than untold hardship here in Nigeria and humiliation by Ghana and other tiny West African countries.

This government does not have any economic policy as they didn't prepare before grabbing power which was their major target.

Am not sure your president will agree. Now that the north are the import entry point for foreign rice and other goods?

The VP is from the south west and so will want the borders opened because his people are losing taxes and illegal smuggling profit.

The ruling cabal will want the southern borders closed so that their own people in the north will enjoy what the SW has been enjoying since independence.

It's a power play really. grin

No o. Keep it closed na. Make people starve.

America as big as it is still imports food. Same with China o. Even with them having mechanized farming and proper policies etc.

Nigeria that does not have any of this and also very poor policies in place, are closing borders and thinking they can stand alone.

Put things in place properly, allow the system to work well so that production can improve before you talk about self sustainability.

don't just close borders or cut trade and force people to manage very little that the country can produce. We need 100 and you're forcing people to manage 20. Rubbish.

Now price of everything is skyrocketing and will continue to rise because farmers are faced with serious flooding right now.

Yet borders are still closed. Incompetent leaders, all of them. Wasting money upandan doing nothing. They don't even know what to do

It is well Nigeria. Your problem too plenty abeg

*They said we are the poverty capital of the world.
Our Darling Daddy decided that we should just close our poverty stricken borders to the outside world so that we can manage on our own.
Suddenly, scarcity hits Benin Republic, Togo, Niger.
Demonstration hits Ghana, Vietnam, Thailand and other envoys all came calling.*
*Their economy depends on our poverty.

They are begging the most corrupt nation on Earth to do business with them.
They have no buyers for their commodity.
In our neighbors domain, scarcity hit them hard.*

It turned out they need us more than we need them.
We have all it takes to stand alone as a nation.
All we need is a plan and a willing leader.

God bless Nigeria*

WE continue to STAND WITH THE BORDER CLOSURE,
It is for the good of all sane, honest and hardworking Nigerians.

Again, God bless Nigeria.
