Chevron Nigeria Limited is caught yet again in an avoidable Industrial Dispute

Barely 8 months after the Industrial dispute that made members of Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Workers (PENGASSAN) of Chevron Nigeria Limited, the Company is embroiled in another Industrial Relations showdown with her employees over plans to terminate the employment of 600 employees and more, alluding to low oil prices and a blatant blackmail of COVID-19 to weep up sympathy from the public and Federal Government.

A source from the Company who pleaded for anonymity disclosed that the Company had gone ahead to declare her entire workforce of over 1900 employees redundant and asked them to reapply to be considered for employment with the Company. The National Body of PENGASSAN had met with the Management of Chevron Nigeria to discuss this on Wednesday 30 September 2020 and had advised that further deliberations on the plan be undertaken and a communique signed between the employees' representatives and the Company for an alternative or process which is hopeful to resolve concerns of both parties. The Company's Management, however, opted to proceed with the plans already set in motion without further engagement.

This situation has led to a shutdown of work activities at the various operating facilities of the Company. At the time of this report, members of PENGASSAN of Chevron Nigeria, who make up a large majority of the personnel in the Company, have commenced a protest against the action taken by Management.

A source within the Ministry of Petroleum in the Country has also disclosed that the Company's Management has the backing of the Minster of State for Petroleum, Mr. Timipre Sylva to commence the process of the mass sack of employees in Chevron Nigeria. It was said that the Minister believes that the employees constitute a high cost burden to the NNPC, who is a senior partner in the CNL/NNPC joint venture. It would be recalled that NNPC recently hired 1000 new employees to boost her operations within the country.

I hope those in the management cadre whose salaries are enough to pay 10 junior workers are also included in the planned sack and not just the poor junior workers who make the true production.
