A public health crisis affecting women of color in the United States existed before the coronavirus began to spread—specifically, the maternal health crisis that has led to Black and Indigenous women dying at three to four times the rate of white women.Despite the fact that the United States spends more on health care than any other developed country, the maternal death rate in certain cities and states is more akin to that of underdeveloped nations.And while the causes are multifaceted, race has proven to be the driving factor, given that Black and Indigenous women experience increased pregnancy-related mortality and morbidity rates even when controlling for income, education, and other factors. During this crisis, hospitals have limited visitors to reduce transmissions among patients and staff.
