Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former governor of Lagos State, is running amuck and has been allowed to do so for too long. Otherwise how can one rationalise two statements attributed to the former governor in a space of 24 hours last week? The first was the order that incumbent governor, Babatunde Raji Fashola should sack all striking doctors and dentists employed by the Lagos State Government and have them replaced them with new ones.

The second was his declaration that Fashola has no business appointing commissioners in the state he administers. That responsibility, he reckoned, lies solely with the ruling party in Lagos, the Action Congress of Nigeria. If these are not the utterances of someone who is getting high on his own sense of self-importance, then I need my own head checked.

This is not to make excuses for the irrational medical personnel in Lagos, who have been coddled and pampered by the state government and are currently being paid wages that millions of professionals in Nigeria would jump at. Still, calling for their sack in one fell swoop does not solve the problem.

For one, recruiting and placing hundreds of doctors and dentists in the right positions in Lagos will amount to a costly, energy sapping exercise that will take several months and years to execute. It would be a lot more cost-effective and faster to keep negotiating with the recalcitrant medical practitioners until an accord, suitable to all parties, is reached. Two, sacking all of them collectively would elevate the crisis, could attract the sympathy of their colleagues nationwide and other labour unions, and snowball into one of unmanageable proportions that Lagos State would later regret.

Three, shouldn’t the responsibility on how to handle the striking doctors in Lagos reside with the state Ministries of Health and Establishment and the governor, Fashola? Instead, Tinubu’s directive to sack the state’s medical personnel was littered with the pronoun “we”. As in “We have provided a conducive environment for them to work and yet they are still not satisfied…”, “We are not going to reinstate him (Dr. Ibrahim Olaifa) because the moment you subject the authority given by the constitution to blackmail, you are finished…”, ““We have increased the salary of doctors to 75 percent and what that implies is that the most junior doctors in the state today have their salary increase from N110, 000 to N170, 000”. Who are “we”?

As I write this, I am not aware that Tinubu is still the governor of Lagos State, nor is he a member of state’s cabinet. Neither is he a member of the state House of Assembly. What we do know about Tinubu is that he is a member of the ACN, a key member and financier, but nothing more, nothing less.

Even if the strike by the doctors and dentists in Lagos is politically motivated, as Tinubu has alleged, did he have the mandate of his party to issue the directive? Was it one taken by the stakeholders of the party that this was their position on the state they control politically?

Which brings us to the other bizarre declaration by Tinubu; that the responsibility of appointing commissioners and special advisers into the state’s cabinet resides solely with the ACN. Fashola, on the other hand, should accept whoever is thrust upon him, because according to Tinubu, “many trusted people campaigned with the governor on the field and hence should be rewarded.” In other words, if they are rogues, incompetent and complete imbeciles, they should be rewarded with appointments into the cabinet, just because the party (sorry, Tinubu), says so.

I wonder if Tinubu as governor had his cabinet members picked for him solely by his party. Obviously, since he picked most of the cabinet members in 2007, he reckons he can lord it over Fashola again in 2011. Poor Fashola! What on earth has he gotten himself into?

But even if we were to digress a bit from Tinubu’s unchecked meddling into the affairs of Lagos and contrasted his statement with that of General Muhammadu Buhari’s on what led to the breakdown of talks between ACN and the Congress for Progressive Change on their proposed alliance, it has become quite apparent that there is something amiss.

Whilst Tinubu has blamed everything blamable under the sun, including some alleged moles planted by the Peoples Democratic Party and former President Olusegun Obasanjo to truncate the proposed alliance, Buhari and his party’s response has been measured, reminding the former governor that it was his ambition that led to the dissolution of the proposed affiliation. Buhari’s statement was further corroborated by a member of ACN, Attahiru Bafarawa, who claimed over the weekend, that it was Tinubu’s desire to be Buhari’s running mate that led to the breakdown in talks between the parties. I wonder how Nuhu Ribadu, the “presidential” candidate of ACN must be feeling now that everything’s out in the open that he was merely a pawn in a grand design that fell flat on its face.

Clearly, Tinubu is exhibiting signs of someone suffering for a case of the god complex – a state of mind in which a person believes that they have supernatural powers or god-like abilities, and generally believes they are above the rules of society and should be given special consideration.

That they have taken this long to manifest is even a miracle. Quite frankly, anyone allowed to run around without control with the amount of power he wields particularly in Lagos and some states in the south-west would end up misusing it. Even those with some recollection of Chief Obafemi Awolowo at the height of his reign in the old western region and Lagos, acknowledge that the late sage was a lot more circumspect about imposing his influence over the dominion he controlled.

Privately, I have always expressed concern about the stranglehold Tinubu has over Lagos. Those blindly in support of his excesses have always excused them on the grounds that he made Fashola what he is today and has shielded the state from the marauding army of the PDP. Yes, he handpicked Fashola and has managed to “outsmart” the PDP at its own game in some sections of the south-west, but that does not mean that those of us resident in Lagos should standby and allow the governor to be turned into a zombie controlled from Tinubu’s private fiefdom in Ikoyi. The governor, after all, swore to work for Lagos and its people, not for Tinubu and Company Limited.

Contrary to the popular perception, Tinubu really had no choice but to endorse and support Fashola’s reelection bid as the ACN governorship candidate in Lagos State for the April poll. Though Fashola had to beg and kowtow to get Tinubu’s blessing, realistically the ACN strongman knew that the governor was too popular to discard and would have had a riot on his hands had he done so. What this implies is that even when Tinubu’s judgement is beclouded with the power and influence that he thinks he possesses, some glimmer of clarity occasionally shines through and reminds him that power actually resides with the people.

Historically and current events in North Africa and the Middle East all point to the fact that no strongman has ever survived a popular rebellion by the people. A revolt, in this case, does not have to translate to people rioting on the streets and clashing with constituted authority. A revolt can come by way of protest votes for another candidate or a plebiscite indicating that they have had enough.

Tinubu’s saving grace to date is that his successor is widely liked. He should also thank his stars that the other parties in Lagos have not offered us credible alternatives worth considering. This writer among millions of Lagosians on election day would most likely cast our votes for Fashola on April 16. But Tinubu needs to get off his high horse and stop pushing his luck. Otherwise he will wake up one day to discover that the emperor has been stripped bare.

I know stupidity and lack of intelligent reasoning is ibo  people's eternal domain, but let me teach you a little civic  lesson,

We = Lagosians including Tinubu because Tinubu is a Lagosian and everything done by the government of Lagos is done on behalf of Lagosians including Tinubu. Every tax paying Lagosian including  Tinubu  is entitled to utter that word  "WE".

They use the phrase "government of the people, by the people, for the people" for a reason.

And all over the world including Britain, the US and Nigeria, the ruling party and party loyalists selects government officials like heads of parastatals and commissioners. Odechukwu didn't pick his cabinet and the top public officials around him, the party leaders and PDP state governors did.

You ibo clowns including the ibo writer really need to STFU and go find something better to do with your time.  You people are just hopelessly d/umb.

I remember on the other thread, I asked what is the other name for Tinubu since in your bigoted reasoning all you could only remember is GEJ.
I never new someone else was taking note of the mouth running drug lord and Pen robber.
I only hope Fashola grow some balls and throw drug lord Tinubu out of the arena because he(Tinubu)'s becoming an eyesore and an incompetent buffoon.
Fashola is doing a very good job but He(Fashola) should also declare and announce to the world that Eko Ile alias Babapupa is not his g/a/y lover.

The issue raised in this well written article has got nothing to do with ethnic bigotry or anything similar. As a Yoruba man myself, I've always found Tinubu too over-bearing and God-like posturing. The fact that he is even a corrupt leader mekes me loathe the man.

Thank you. This journalist had written an earlier critical piece on Orji Kalu, did anyone yell tribalism? No.
Whenever we as Nigerians can rise above petty tribalism to confront the very challanging tasks facing our country, then there will be hope.
I'm still waiting for anybody to systematically disprove the points raised in her article.

It's easier to rain tribal and ethnic profanity as a cover for ignorance and stupidiy, but the astute step to be taken by the "Better' will be to counter-argue her points one- by-one, and in a similar proffessional manner.

At a time like this, I personally wait for the informative opinions of the likes of Katusmoto and others, not these barely literate area boys.

Very simple - Tinubu looks at politics from a business perspective. So, since Tinubu is the party, then he controls the cabinet if allowed to appoint commissioners.

The good thing is, Lagosians are not fools, we will reject him very soon and his party. People will vote for ACN only because of Fashola

Bafarawa killed CPC/ACN alliance - Senator
Written by Taiwo Adisa
Wednesday, 02 March 2011

Senatorial candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) in Katsina South Senatorial District, Senator Abu Ibrahim, has placed the blame for the disruption of the alliance talks between the party and the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) on former Sokoto State governor, Alhaji Attahiru Bafarawa.

The senator in an interview with newsmen in Abuja said that claims by Bafarawa that the former Lagos State governor, Senator Bola Tinubu, was responsible for the collapse of the talks was not true as, according to him, Bafarawa had a history of selling his party to any ruling party.

He stated that Bafarawa as a serving governor of the All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP) visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo at Aso Rock to pledge his support to the government, adding that leaders of the opposition had now discovered the moles and the chief moles responsible for the failure of the alliance talks.

He stated: “Bafarawa was not in the first place a member of the negotiating team of the CPC and the ACN. I think he is being troubled by guilty conscience because he was one of the people who were accused of trying to derail the CPC/ACN alliance.”

The senator said that while the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was afraid of the alliance and would do everything possible to stall the plan, the leaders of opposition had decided to keep the prospect alive so that they would not be caught unawares.

According to him, with 48 per cent of the total votes shared between the North-West and the South-West, the strongholds of the two parties, the PDP was certainly troubled by prospects of an alliance.

“I can tell you that the alliance is still alive. We are talking and we want to be prepared so that when there is a rerun in the general election, we will not start afresh,” the Senator said, adding that with the situation on ground, one candidate may not emerge the clear winner of the presidential election in the first ballot.

He said that the opposition parties have continued their discussion in search of areas of electoral cooperation.

^^^^ that is from a cpc man

Bafarawa lied against Tinubu, says ACN/ CPC alliance facilitator

One of the facilitators of the alliance talks between the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), Senator Abu Ibrahim, yesterday said debunked the claim that former Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu was responsible for the collapse of the negotiation.

Former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa has alleged that Tinubu caused the collapse of the talks. Abu has asked ex-Sokoto helmsman to search his conscience.

Ibrahim, at a briefing in Abuja, said the talks were 99 per cent successful before extraneous influences came in.

Many Lagosians are aware of Tinubu's character. His saving grace is that he almost single-handedly created a party which has proven to be a considerably better alternative to the PDP in Lagos.

I would be willing to wager on his influence waning by 2015. Nothing lasts forever.

Many Lagosians are aware of Tinubu's character. His saving grace is that he almost single-handedly created a party which has proven to be a considerably better alternative to the PDP in Lagos.

I would be willing to wager on his influence waning by 2015. Nothing lasts forever.

You're wrong. In Tinubu, we see a strong and capable leader who is looking out for his people and lagosians in general. Lagosians are not at the mercy of the federal government because of Tinubu, he not only fought them till they surrendered, he did not sell out or betray his people, he did not sell out like a lot of weak and shortsighted leaders selling out their people for money, same Tinubu with others from nadeco fought for your democracy, same Tinubu with his strong foresight and vision gave us Fashola who is on record as the best state administrator in our country.

Tinubu' primary responsibility as a leader is to look out for his people and he's yet to fail his people in anyway and if this nonsensical and misguided rubbish is all you have to cry about, then you are obviously wasting you time.

To tell you the truth, we need more fighters like Tinubu

I was expecting you to pull up this formal and meaningless rubbish.,,

And where is it asserting that the governor can not or shouldn't appoint or select officials based on the recomendation of his party? The fact that the law states that the governor appoints his officials doesn't mean his party can not or shouldn't select officials within his party to appoint and confirm.

It is common sense that the governor ends up making all appointments official, but where he get his officials from is irrelevant and is  not in anyway a breach of the law.

@Kobo

Dont get it twisted, the party appoints the commissioners, that is usually one of the first things agreed upon before the nomination ticket is awarded to anybody, we should credit Tinubu with the fact that he has not saddled Lagos with brain dead people at the helm of affairs, what we need in Lagos is a more credible opposition to ACN, this will force the party to wake up. Tinubu funded NADECO, fought for this democracy, he might not be a saint, but his contributions should be applauded.
The ACN believes in choosing its candidates via a consesus or elders forum way, the opposition can come up with better candidates to test their popularity with us the voters, we can decide to reject Tinubu's appointees at the elections, but, going by his selections so far, the man has got it right. I do not care about who my leader is as long as I can see him bettering my lot and that of the common man.
Jonathan did not get to appoint his ministers, who is he to do that, the list was handed to him, even OBJ sef bowed to the party in 1999, it was in 2003 that OBJ became the party that he was able to appoint his peeps.

See, here is the problem with your post that I see. You are telling me of what the party does, something not sanctioned by the Nigerian Constitution or even that of the state of Lagos. At least be able to show me where the constitution allows for a party to directly hinder an elected State Governor from appointing commissioners as a result of IN-PARTY decisions?

Fashola was allegedly stopped from appointing his own commissioners, from my understanding of the issue. Anyone who attempts to do that ought to have some legal rationale for such an action, not some back end agbero deal that cannot be substantiated, since in this particular case, the commissioners are not ACN commissioners but  Lagos State (an ACN independent entity) commissioners.

Telling me Jonathan, according to you, did this, and so it should be acceptable is telling me that we should all allow the bad continue just because you think Someone else did it and so it ought to be alright. If the PDP has openly reprimanded Jonathan for selecting his own ministers, I am certain you would cry foul since the constitution does not draw a connection between a party and the seat of government.
