SARS is likely gone, they have replaced it with SWAT. However that should not mean anything. We should now go for laws that would give severe penalties to people who abuse Nigerians under the guise of a uniform.

Men in uniform, whether FRSC, Customs, Army, Navy etc must be accountable for any action that is not within the books. For example, a policeman struck an elderly woman across the face leaving tiger marks on her left cheek yesterday in Lagos. Her offence? She pointed at the police station! Such madness must have a price.

Several years ago, there was traffic on Lagos Ibadan expressway leading to a mess on the lane. FRSC officials were trying to make order of the mess, a man came down from a SUV, tall and well built wearing naval uniform. He was mad at a FRSC official who stopped his vehicle by standing on the way so that a flow of traffic from one side can occur.

The naval man was annoyed. He came down from the SUV in that annoyance and charged at FRSC officer. In a twinkle, he had landed a 100km/hr slap on the FRSC's face. I was shocked just as the slap shocked the FRSC gentleman. He didn't stop there. He reached for his boots and out came a knife. This was in broad daylight. It was the intervention of the other FRSC guys that stopped him. Both FRSC and Navy men were in uniforms.

You would have seen the number of people who FRSC has made mad - those men who go completely naked to escape from FRSC harassment. Is all that the Nigeria we want? No.

We should be reaching out to Senators, I will and please do too. Whether they will hear or not is a separate matter. But enough is enough. A policeman is no different from a teacher. The only difference is the uniform and the gun they may be carrying. He is just a government employee and the uniform does not grant him any rights.

You slap me and you pay the price. Uniform or no uniform. That is what the law says. Now the law should be resurrected, polished or reformed, and then put into action. #EndSARS should end with a law protecting the public. That is when all these protests would be worth anything.
