ASCOLOGY NEWS - Seven children died when their rural American farmhouse was engulfed in flames as their mother was off milking cows and their father was driving a milk truck, police said Wednesday.

It was unclear what caused the fire, which broke out shortly after 10:00 pm (0300 GMT) on Tuesday night in the eastern state of Pennsylvania, state trooper Thomas Pinkerton told AFP.

When the fire broke out one of the family's eight children, a three-year-old girl, ran to fetch her mother, who was out in a barn milking cows. Their father had recently left on his milk truck delivery route.

The panicked mother saw the fire, but was apparently unable to get inside the building, Pinkerton said.

She was eventually able to call emergency services from a neighbor's house, but by the time the fire department arrived her house was engulfed in flames.

The deceased children ranged from seven months to 11 years old. The only surviving child was the three-year-old who ran to the barn.

Police said they were still investigating the cause of the fire.
