Formula One driver Lewis Hamilton has thrown his weight behind the fight against police brutality and extra-judicial killings in Nigeria. The British driver on Sunday shared a photo of him wearing a black shirt with the Nigerian map and EndSARS crested on it. “We all have a responsibility to educate ourselves and raise awareness of the tragedies happening in the world around us and take action where we can,” he tweeted on his official handle, amplifying calls to end human rights abuses by the police. “The recent events in Nigeria are a human rights crisis.” At the onset of the month, many Nigerians took to the streets, demanding the scrapping of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a unit of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) hated by many in Africa’s most populous nation. The now-defunct unit of the police was accused of human rights abuses and extra-judicial killings, a development which the demonstrators say had been going on for years. Despite the scrapping of the unit by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Adamu Mohammed, the protesters stayed on the streets, citing similar pronouncements which were made in the past but came to nothing. Things took a dangerous dimension on Tuesday last week when armed soldiers opened fire on the protesters in the Lekki area of Lagos State. The shooting, witnesses say, resulted in the death of scores of persons but the Nigerian Army later denied responsibility for the incident. Human rights organization, Amnesty International, however, put the casualty figure from the incident and another one at Ikeja at 12. https://www.channelstv.com/2020/10/25/endsars-recent-events-in-nigeria-are-a-human-rights-crisis-hamilton/amp/?__twitter_impression=true

Buhari has shamelessly put us on a map we have long deserved to be on. Now the whole world knows that in Nigeria, human life is worthless at the hands of government agents, and at the hands of the hungry and angry population. 2 Likes |

This whole episode is saddening on a different level.. Nigeria is being "demarketed" as a result of all these negative attention. I mean, deu to Buhari and Burutais intrasigence, Nigeria is now trending worldwide for all the wrong reasons and the daftheads running this country don't even seem to care... Traveling around the world and seeing Nigerian music stars drawing respect for the country deu to their talents, Nigerian movies pratically dominating the scenes both in Africa and the carribean, Nigerian soccer stars and writers making everyone proud! Then this!? Buhari is a huge mistake and those who imposed him need to be purnished severely for inflicting this mess on all of us! Most of these international black stars have been forced into an uncomfortable situation where they have to quickly "transit" from crying over white police brutality on blacks in their domain to now fighting black police brutality against fellow blacks in one queer African country called Nigeria! The white establishment in these countries must be chuckling! It's well... |

Throwback: The way we were looked at before these events will be totally different from the way we will be looked at after... Reminds me of the aftermath of the NADECO vs Abacha confrontations.. Nigeria never recovered from the PR disaster that came with that scuffle... |

Zombies can continue to run amok and disgrace themselves around Nairaland and Twitter. What's most important is that the world knows the truth now. The Hague awaits Buhari, Buratai and his murderous soldiers. Their online urchins and cretins can go and die. |

And to think that this is a struggle our home government and politicians are downplaying is so dehumanizing on us as a nation. The looting & destruction of politicians houses or private establishments are not acceptable but they are signs of the impending catastrophe that will befall this them in no time to come. The pentup anger have reached its elastic limit. |
