Nigeria has been battling with power supply for years now. I believe the only way out of this is to take away power supply from exclusive list. The federal government is biting more than it can chew. They should allow state to generate and distribute power. So many things have to be removed from exclusive list. This is the only way forward. Our next protest should include this demands. Security and power should live the exclusive list.

1. Power disribution and generation has been in private hands since 2014 . Government controls transmission

2.Our problem with power is that

a) It costs 53 naira to produce one kwh of power.

b) And we insist on selling that kwh of power at N30 and below

c) And as a result, government has to pay for a subsidy which does not cover the resulting losses the DISCOS and GENCOS make.

d) Thus, since 2014, we have been running our power sector at a loss.

e) Contributing to the loss is the fact that in many areas of Nigeria, between 40-60% of people hooked to the power grid don't pay for power.

f) No PROFITS IN the power sector means no investment, no financial aid from lending institutions, no money to upgrade and expand faciliites and so on.

g) Even if we hand over to the states, where do the states get the money to fix things up? By making power at 53 Naira per kwh and selling it below N30 per kwh? Next thing...states would be taking heavy loans, and raising taxes to fill up the financial hole.

h) Recently the government tried to allow DISCOS raise the price of power to as high as 67 naira per kwh. But Nigerians said no, so prices went down again, and the money from the subsidy is to come from vat...which means we are back to square one. And that means that eventually VAT wuld have to be raised to keep up with costs.

Either we let power be run profitably , or we just keep on taking loans after loans .
