ASUU STRIKE: Should ASUU Suspend The Strike For Students' Sake? by Hardeysolution(m): 1:39pm On Oct 29, 2020
Knowing that we have a useless government with no value for education, will it be alright for ASUU to suspend its strike?

Majority of students don't know why ASUU strike is on. The students, which I call the major stakeholders are not informed of what is going on.

ASUU has been a regular "striker" since 1980s and have suffered bans and proscriptions about twice in the military regime. It is clear that, the struggle has been on for a while.

Many students will ask, "is strike the only way?" while ASUU will respond, "that is usually the last resort".

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) is a union of teachers in Universities and one would wonder, why Vice Chancellors are not usually part of their struggle but that's not the focus this time.

Why this 2020 Strike action?
When the strike actions began in March 2020, Covid-19 lockdown accompanied it and students were eventually asked to stay home. This continued for months until the lockdown restriction was removed and schools were asked to resume October 12th, 2020.

One would have expected that the dispute between ASUU and the FG would have been settled, but that is not the case at all.

This 2020 strike action started as a means to press further the memorandum of understanding signed in 2009/2019 which contains several other clauses including renegotiation of 2009 agreement, constitution of visiting panels to universities, revitalisation funds amongst others. However, the struggle for a payment platform was conjoined with the initial struggles.

FG rolled out Integrated Personnel Payment and Information System - IPPIS as a payment platform for all workers which ASUU objected. ASUU was asked to develop a working platform for universities, and they came up with UTAS - University Transparency and Account System.

Why is ASUU against IPPIS?

ASUU claims that IPPIS does not capture the situations at the universities and so, not in line with the university act. ASUU claimed the system was developed by the world bank and it of course has a lot of discrepancies. According to ASUU, a lecturer cannot be allowed to teach in more than one universities which is not healthy for the educational system.

What are students saying?

Many students are of the opinion that ASUU frequent strike actions are a delay factor and have turned many students to dropouts, have caused many to grow apathy towards learning and even dashed the hope of many parents.

Even if the fight is legitimate, ASUU should, if indeed, they care about the students like they claim, find a better way as intellectuals, to press home their demands.

It is worrisome how that the university system witnesses strike actions more than other sector. Yet, the lecturers will be paid, but the students cannot regain those lost times. This doesn't concern the lecturers as they are after what they will get.

If since 1982, the struggle has begun, does it make sense to say, only an unending fight is fought with the same strategy. How would you explain how a student will be in the same class for three years, all thanks to the frequent strikes.

Should ASUU find a common ground for the sake of the students whose futures are looking bleak already? A student gained admission at 23 because of several disappointments from UTME and post UTME, you yet ASUU strikes will turn a four year course to seven years, only for him to graduate at age 30 and become unfit for major jobs (that aren't even available).

Time, and value, which is more important? If we want valuable education, we should join ASUU in this fight for a better education system but what happens to the time of students who are at the receiving end of all these?

they can't because they claim they are fighting for the same students.
they're not only fighting for the students but for the Nation at large.
When the people in power are getting drunk with power somebody or a group of people should be able to call them to order!
Nigerian government made law for the Nigerian Universities, which you can read here https://laws.lawnigeria.com/2018/04/19/lfn-universities-miscellaneous-provisions-act-1993-no-11/
but the same government wants to violate the very same law! That is why ASUU is saying NO, NO, NO!
