Why Have Nigerians 'casted' The UK? by sweetmelanin(f): 12:13pm On Nov 01, 2020
The UK has one of the largest groups of Nigerian diaporians in the world which should make it one of the most alluring choices for Nigerians looking to move abroad as its easier to migrate to a place where others of your kind are... However, there seems to be a growing lack of interest amongst Nigerians towards relocating to the UK and I believe there are two main points of discussion on this.

1. The abolition of the ' Two-Year Post-Study Work Visa' in 2012 and subsequent re-introduction of a new post study work visa called "The Graduate Route" in 2020.

Up until 2012, international students were able to gain residence in the UK through post study visas however, the abolition of this scheme in 2012 saw that a lot of young immigrants hoping to gain residence via study had their dreams dashed - many were sent home immediately after their programmes ended.. leaving a trail of disappointment/resentment amongst young Nigerians who had spent 1-4 years in the UK investing so heavily into international school fees only to be forced to return back home to compete for jobs in the already oversaturated marketplace of unemployed graduates many of who paid a fraction of the cost schooling in Nigeria. These 'returnees' were ridiculed and shamed for "coming back with nothing to show for it" and the stigma echoed throughout year by year until students no longer considered UK a viable option for immigration through study.

The UK realized that rival nations such as the US, Canada and Australia maintained such visas, whilst they (the UK) suffered a huge loss in revenue in universities. As thus, in a bid to combat the depleting funds gained from the international student community, the UK has now introduced a new post-study work visa for international students graduating from summer 2021 going forwards... which allows students to live and work in the UK for up to two years after a Masters, or three years after a PhD.

However this change doesn't seem to impress/appeal to young Nigerians who now have thier eyes fixated on other countries (Canada especially).

2. Brexit and its Economic Impact

The general message the UK has echoed out to the international community by voting 'Brexit' is that they no longer want to accept immigrants. However, what many fail to realise is that the UK CANNOT sustain itself without immigrants. Many Brits voted ignorantly out of covert racism without considering the negative economic consequences of this. Immigrants make up the largest chunk of essential workers the UK.. take the NHS for example which is run by immigrant workers who are mainly doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants etc.. the average Brit doesn't pursue advanced educational courses or training to take up skilled positions such as optometry which is taken over by the Indians, likewise manual labour which is done by mostly blacks, Polish and other EU workers.

The truth is that.. while Brexit closes its doors to mass EU immigration, many EU citizens are migrating back to their countries and Britain may struggle to find skilled workers to fill in the labor gap. This then creates a boomerang effect, thus opening doors for immigrants from non-EU nations such as Africa and Asia. We might find that once Brexit deals are complete, the UK will find itself soliciting for skilled workers from "third world" countries in order to sustain the economy.

The fact is that the UK is still a viable option for relocation.. so why are Nigerians refusing to consider the opportunities therein?

Feel free to add your points..

Funds is also an issue. UK is still a viable option for most Nigerians, people are still applying for visas on a steady so I won't say Nigerians have "casted" the UK.

I see a plethora of individuals speaking ill of the UK on this platform... for example there's an active thread in this section where a man is asking for other countries to move his family too, and a number of folks have discouraged him from considering the UK...

Most people are talking down on UK because it is hard to gain PR through study route hence the badmouthing. You think people so much love canada because of good economy? Nigerians love where they can benefit from grin

Canada is most people's favorite destination because of easy access to become a citizen. No one wants to spend millions nd end up coming back home wink

i have lots of ex colleagues who are working as auditors in uk. Pwc, delliote, kpmg and co. But are all doing canada pr or have left. Dont you think there must be a reason. After 3 to 4 years on work permit, they may deny you permanent residency based on flimsy excuses. No one wants to be in that situation. Similarly alot of Indians immigrants with good jobs in usa are doing canada express entry because of trump. Its not rocket science

You are not being entirely honest with this, its very rare to be refused ILR when you have lived here legally for 5yrs unless you did not meet the requirement.

Eventually the UK will start doing regional immigration programs (probably mostly to Scotland). That will attract Nigerians, if the first group actually gets papers. But even that has its limits. The UK is tiny. You can fit all the british isles in Nigeria more than once. Nigeria has like triple its population. There's people all over the world trying to get in. Obviously, they're only letting so many people in. And their economy can only handle so much.

I have looked through the UK immigration website for the new post study visa. I couldn't find it. I plan to apply for a masters programme at the University of Leeds or University of East Anglia.

I would appreciate it if you could provide me a link for the new post study visa on the UK immigration website.

Thank you.

it is not easy getting jobs that will qualify one for work permit after the 2 years. Its just a scam to make more people come. You are likely to do uber or security job for that 2 years and get kicked out

Far from scam, many benefited from that program if you has what it takes to get employed. Don't be expect to be given a job because you have a degree or Msc. Nobody kicks you out at the end so you are allowed to switch to other visa type or go back to school.

Its important we don't mislead people here

My point is this in uk, you are judged by were you come from and you would always be boxed with the box called BAME were preference is given to indians and asians before you. So after spending so much on studies you would end up doing menial jobs like security, driving, factory and care as a black coupled with heavy taxation. Also the social climate is very unfriendly and tasteless. This is unlike northern america were you are rewarded based on your skills and a more friendly climate. If you are not a doctor, nurse or it person na menial job you go dey do.

You can apply for skilled worker if you qualify in Canada. Then be a citizen in 3 to 4 years. You can come to Canada as a student, get a 3 year work visa after school, then eventually apply for PR once you meet the requirements. School is also cheaper, and is in Canadian dollars. If you're looking to leave naija for good, going to the UK doesn't make sense really. Unless you're going to marry a UK citizen.
