The Porosity Of Nigeria’s Borders: International Disgrace, National Disaster by thefederationng: 10:47am On Nov 08, 2020
On Saturday October 31, 2020 just few days to the United States presidential election, news of the rescue of an American hostage in Nigeria hit the international scene. For the United States, it was a stellar demonstration of its age-long commitment to never abandon its citizens regardless of how far away from home they are; for Nigeria and Nigerians, it was a bitter reminder of the insecurity that has pervaded the nation in recent years manifesting as terrorists and insurgents, kidnappers and robbers making “home” one of the most dangerous places a Nigerian could be. An indictment on the international scene of an administration that rode to power on the wings of promises of safety and security during the heat of the Boko Haram insurgency, it has dealt a crucial blow to the international perception of the nation still tripping over its heels in a poor attempt to cover up and downplay the gross violation of fundamental human rights meted out against Nigerian citizens by Nigerian law enforcement agents during and after the protests against police brutality.

As bad as it looks, it assumes more shameful proportions when we remember that the American citizen wasn’t kidnapped on Nigerian soil.
