According to this Link Nigeria's unemployment rate is 27.1 percent while Nigeria's under-employment rate is 28.6 percent. That is, more than 50 percent of Nigerians are either completely unemployed or grossly underemployed (they get paid little for doing so much).

If you are Nigerian student hoping to further in any tertiary institution of your choice, do not study a course just because you like it.

The only reason why you should study any course should be because of its employability rate. Ask yourself, if I study Biochemistry for example, will I get a job. How many people in the past few years have gotten a biochemistry job?

Jambites are found of going to school to study courses with fancy names but many of these courses won't get you a job or a well paid job after graduation.

Another mistake Jambites make is rushing for Medicine, Law, Accountancy and other courses in their leagues. Why would apply for medicine when you know you'll probably never meet up with the cut of mark? Let's be candid, a high percentage of Nigerian student are average (including myself). It will be absolute foolishness (for a lack of better word) if an average student keep wasting their precious years in search of admission into law.

There are other non-celebrated courses out there that'll fetch you money, Computer Science, Music, Food and Nutrition amongst others fall into this category.

Gone are the days when a certificate guarantees a job. These days what guarantee you a job as a graduate (or anybody else) is connection, your money or your skill.

Most people don't have money to buy a job, most are not connected but most people can have a skill that'll make them financially independent and that is what you as a student should leverage on before becoming a graduate.

Learn a skill that'll fetch you money.

Ask yourself, how many Economics graduates you know have gotten a well paid job as an Economist in the last 5 years.

That'll answer your question.

""Jambites are found of going to school to study courses with fancy names but many of these courses won't get you a job or a well paid job after graduation."' You have said my mind. I have never seen someone who studied Biochemistry or Microbiology getting full employment. They usually end up as unqualified Teachers in private schools.

Nice thread. I've never seen someone who studied Biochemistry or Microbiology getting employed as a Biochemist or Microbiologist. Yet, our universities keep admitting people into these fruitless departments.

That's true. But there are exceptions.

I studied biochemistry and when I look at my biochemical future, it always bleak.

Many of my colleagues have now dived into another career. I went for an interview the other day and it was for a post of "IT Support".

Of course I've changed career now.

My only regret was studying the course just because I liked it.

Another cause for this is herd mentality.

Some parents/guardians will force their children/wards to study a particular course, just because their friend's children are studying same OR because the course sounds good to the ears.

Some students also join the bandwagon cos they have friends studying the same course OR they saw someone that studied that particular course & has big cars, big house without even knowing others things s/he does or did to acquire them.

It's so sad. But I see no end in sight for the trend.

Find a skill that'll make you money when you graduate and start learning now!

The skill doesn't have to relate to your course and you don't have to like it but if it will make you money, please, I beg you. LEARN. IT!!!

Would you rather waste 4/5 years studying a course that won't get you a job?

If you study music, your years in school will be focused on it. Music is practical and trust me even before graduation you'll start getting musical gigs, going for show and post graduation you'll be among the best in what you do.

Mind you music doesn't end in singing. It includes playing of instruments, orchestrating a choir, song writing and arrangement and lots more.

Did you studied the course because you liked it or because it sounds fancy to you? Am a qualified and professional Teacher but I'm not proud of who I am. Most of us do make wrong choices because of flimsy reasons.

Biochemistry is still one of the most interesting course any one can ever study.
It's rich and keeps you wanting more.

But all these qualities can't bring food on anyone's table.

My advise for teenagers is that they should go for courses that have high labour market demand, full of practicals and is easy to be self-employed e.g computer related courses.

You just summarized all my epistles.

Two of my colleagues are now bakers. Just imagine if someone told them to study Food and Nutrition when they were jambites.

One of the best student in my set is now selling data online. He's also looking to become a teacher. I can bet it that he has never attended an interview for a biochemistry job since '18.

But I regretted not studying medicine if my Dad would spend just a little money and had me enrolled in pre-degree. I'm still angry at him anytime I see my doctor friends. I know where them they now as doctors, one is presently a flying officer(doctor) in the military, same guy when I dey teach then, success in life isn't based on academic excellence. After missing it the first year I switched to engineering because I was good at maths and physics but I actually wanted medicine the fear of writing jamb 5 times is the beginning of wisdom.

This is tricky to answer.

If she is very brilliant, let her study medicine, pharmacy or nursing.

If she's not a science student, let her study any course she likes but enroll her in a skill acquisition program that will make her independent in the future.

My own sister is into makeup, she also ties gele (Head gear) and she's richer than me and she's a jambite.

I'm currently unemployed though. grin
