Well, I looked on in amusement when you guys ran the thread for a game development and started by asking for 15 programmers and i saw a lot of python and php programmers jumping on the team. Loads of enthusiasm and excitement so why did it fail? listen to an old guru, 1) Gaming software is graphics, you need to be looking at a flavour of C (C#, C++, Java) or low level language, or else a language designed exclusively for games, like unity 2) you should be looking at possibly a third party library 3) Somebody should have researched and been responsible for software design. who was team lead? who was project manager? How was the decision made to do a 3D game without considering available skill set 4) Even the script was open to democracy. Game development is not about gathering programmers and 3d animators. If u guys dont mind an old timer saying so, 5) i think you guys should contribute, go to amazon.com and get any of these BOOKS on how to write a 3D game Essential 3D Game Programming: How to Create a Playable Game from Start to Finish by Ian Millington Hardcover $47.17 Game Programming Gems 8 by Adam (Adam Lake) Lake Hardcover $43.64 GPU Pro: Advanced Rendering Techniques by Wolfgang Engel Hardcover $69.08 Game Development with Unity by Michelle Menard 6) You will discover that you dont need 15 programmers, you need just one or two, you need a basic background design and a simple script |

Lets see dude, we get two guys with your credentials and they make a game. What next? We'll still have a 100 individuals who want to make games, have fun and just do stuff that pleases them. I don't think you thought well before creating this thread. The first thing you should know is that the game dev project is very much alive. While a lot of us may not be able to post or do stuff daily, we still try to learn what we can when we get the opportunity. We started the project with high hopes and expectations. We've made several good and bad decisions. Many times, we've found ourselves in need of new knowledge to solve each problem facing us. Each time, each passing day, I see us getting better and moving forward. We have not failed because we have not stopped. We have not given up. We're still having a lot of fun. Thanks for the list of books anyways. The money to purchase them is another matter. Consider it as one of the things you should have thought of before posting. |

I appreciate your reply because it was very frank, but it neednt have degenerated into an insult. I also appreciate where you are coming from, trying to satify the loads of people who want to develop a game, but that won't achieve the objective. It's not about wishes being horses, if u know the adage. I also thank you that you recognise that my suggesting the books is a breakthrough for this project!!!! One would have thought your great numbers would assist you to buy one of the books, how much is $47 among over 100 posters that have thronged that post? But I forget that today's ICT kids HATE spending any money and survive on copyright infringements aka e-book download. If you guys are humble, I can help, but I still say that a small team should do the research and succeed first at a simple game, then provide documentation and a development path and even a library that can be extended, and throw it open-source to the hungry community who all want to try their hands at game development. And must it be 3d? Take a cue from Linux, MS-DOS beginnings- no GUI, good foundations, few developers, open source. Today we have all sorts of Linuxes from redhat, suse, knoppix to Ubuntu and MS-DOS has gone from Windows 1.0 to Win98, Win200, XP, Vista, Win7 |

@qunleajayi: No we will not be humble. Don't help us. You can have your laugh the day everyone of us posts that we have failed. And about the books, When we contribute, how do we share the books? Thought of that? We make photocopies right? Won't that be copyright infringement also? You think if we all had the money we wouldn't have bought books before we even thought of starting the online project? It's really insulting you assume that we don't even know about some of those books. You think we don't do our own research and try to broaden our knowledge. Some of the books you suggested are not even what I'd recommend for many of us starting out. The first one is okay but I don't think it's not out yet so how do we even know it's as good as advertised? There's a lot of other books I'd recommend but where's the money for the guys to buy them. The thing is, it's not just about knowing how to use c++ and openGL or scripting in unity. A lot of other knowledge have to be applied. Many of us are encountering new concepts for the first time and we are taking our time to learn what we can. I never did physics in school but I'm taking my time to learn certain things from my friends' textbooks at school and just so you know, not everyone here resorts to downloading ebooks and other materials illegally. Stop acting like you're the perfect one. Put a pin a your head and bust that pride dude. You didn't make any breakthrough for this project. You've only succeeded in annoying us. I for one won't call myself a great programmer yet. I see programming as fun and that is why I took it as an hobby. I've never taken any programming lesson from any institution except for the silly Visual Basic which was part of our Computer course last semester. I started learning programming in 2009 from this very forum and my love for gaming has been a great motivation. I'm a student. I don't study computer science and I don't work. I understand some of the difficulties the others are facing and I know what is and what is not. Patience is the key. Maybe you should start seeing the project as an all round learning project for us and not just an attempt to make games that people seem to think must have a Nigerian storyline. SMH. I understand your concerns and appreciate your opinions. Now if you'll excuse me, There's some learning to do and fun to be had. @webdezzi: Thanks. The guys have been trying to do that but the problem is that the geographical distribution of some of the people who actively contribute to the project is wide. |

Gameaddict, only 1 thing I like about you, you are determined, but Oh so proud. I also noticed you checked out the books on amazon. while i dont agree that you guys cant afford to contribute buy the books, but i see your angle that it's just for fun and great exploratory time for everybody. Ok Meantime, think about some of what i said, i know that quite soon, we will have a naija game that is playable, If you need any help, feel free to call. |

Seriously? You actually created a thread to bash us? Naturally, I'd rain insults on you not because I want to but because of your pride. You feel you know too much and that you are better that us. To you, you think that we are just bunch of ignorant people trying to do something like Game programming. Am sorry, I have to say you are greatly ignorant. You know nothing about game development. Yes, many of us are new to game programming and programming as a whole but not all. I have been doing research on game programming right from when I started programming, I mean I started programming because I was interested in game development which was in 2006. So I can beat my chest and say I am no newbie in programming and coding a game would not be much of a problem provided the engine or SDK has good documentation. The only problem I see is just the one webdezzi pointed out and as gameaddict said, our geographical location will not permit us to do that. I stay in Lagos, gameaddict schools in Lagos, it will be unfair for both of us to have a meeting without their consent. Yes, many of us learn by downloading copyrighted materials. Infact, I do, so what are you gonna to about it. Please let's not start an argument on this. We won't ask you for anything so we don't need to be nice to you. I want to let you know that this project is very much alive, its best described as game development group with people who are interested learn as they try to achieve the main goal. Everyday I learn new stuffs relating to the group and hopeful the knowledge acquired by all of us can be brought together. Or are you envious of the fact that we are in your face as the number 1 sticky? If you ask nicely I will let you advertise your website on my signature. Come to think about it. This game will not be sold, y d rush? Gush, let me go and learn some more. |

At least you are honest enough to admit that you guys dont know what the heck you are doing. Since you said that you have been learning game development since 2006, i now see why you set up the thread, not so that any game can develop but so that you can learn for another 6 years more! Stop making excuses about distance and meetings and face the truth. Everything has a method, and this one you have chosen, stinks Look, its not about getting insultive Mail me 5 things you guys have achieved a) The name of the game (is that even decided yet) b) The rules of the game (for where?) c) The language that the game will be written in? d) When the game will be ready e) The Team Leader Most importantly, post me a simple working code that two people can play and I will shut up. In the meantime, keep learning, y'hear? |
