Dear programmer,

I just got myself a HP ProBook laptop and I can say I am very much ready to begin my programming journey. Now my humble questions please:
1. What online platform can I get quality beginners lectures free for my coding adventure?
2. What softwares do you recommend for this purpose, especially an interpreter software?
3. Any other advice dear pros for a beginner like me?

Thank you

First of all, let me welcome you to the sweet world of coding. There are numerous platforms from udemy to bitdegree to access programming tutorials. But three platforms I have found which make learning/introduction to code so easy and fun are:
1. Mimo - https:///3kOnjdm
2. Google's Grasshopper and
3. www. freecodecamp.org

Especially HTML, CSS and JavaScript
Very easy and fast.
Happy coding </>

Am not entirely sure that's a good advice. I learnt programming on my own and it wasn't entirely fun.

If need be pay someone to mentor you. With a good mentor your learning pace could be tripled.

A good mentor will recognize your motivation and determination and will probably not charge you for bi-weekly or monthly meetups. The tech community is highly accommodating and always ready to assist. In my post I was referring to those that try selling their own copy paste courses for high prices.

Dear Auxtan,

I am sure you have gotten a lot of good counsel in response to the questions on every beginner programmers lips. For beginners, there is nothing like having a teacher that makes complex programming concepts so so simple to understand. So here is my humble advice:
1. Go to YouTube
2. Type the following into the search bar: "Durga sir core Java".
3. Download the first video playlist of 203 videos.
4. Start from video 1 to video 203(don't rush it).
5. Ignore the accent. Focus on the message.
6. Don't thank me now. You may do that later.
Durga Sir is a Java god!

For business analyst, you don't need CSC or statistics infact you don't really need programming per say.

What you need are

1.advanced excel skill(DAX, power pivot and power query)

2. Microsoft power BI

3. Tableu

You can go to youtube and search for "MSTPDA" from mike popular known as excel is fun.

That will give you a strong start for the first 2.

Thank you so much sir.

In Nigeria right now, i don't really think data science is a lucrative field ( i might be wrong).
The only advantage i think is that it will boost your CV is many organizations in Nigeria are looking for those with knowledge of python programing knowledge. you can enroll in w3school (https://www.w3schools.com/) and get a certificate after completing their python courses.

I will talk about the concept of "lucrative field" regarding programing in the last paragraph.

I'm an Accountant that's why I think Data Science is good for my career and profession, am I right ?
Am not going to lie you.. i do not really know much about accountants. I think accounting is all about record keeping and stuffs like that.
I cant answer this part of the question.. Am a physicist..my friends who do data science focused on the aspect of computational physics.

How easy does learning Python makes learning other Languages such as C, C++, Java , JS etc ...
Your fist language if the hardest..others will be easy. All programing language have the same logic behind them. syntax for the above listed languages are similar ( I do not know of JS...hope to learn it someday).

is it easy to combine Data Science and Cybersecurity (Infosec) together or just stick to one ?
Yes.. Cybersecurity and Python fits very well..python also support server side scripting like php which is very useful in Cybersecurity.

As per lucrative fields, it all boils down to your creativity. What can you do with the knowledge you have. Mr A can have all the knowledge in this word and still not be successful. Mr B can have 1/3 of that knowledge and be the world most successful man. Remember it's all about solving problems..creating simpler solution to complex problem. B4 we chart by sending mesages via sms and emails to another..now c how easy charting has become. That's what programing is all about. You look at your surrounding and see what programing your knowledge of programing can improve. I pray someday Nigeria will learn to invest on local developers and promote home-grown solutions to problems. As a Nigerian programs, let programing be your secondary source of income not first..I.e if you are a freelancer. All the best!

You are a wonderful person. Thanks so much. I see Data Science is unpopular in Nigeria, it is only Website everyone wants to build here.  The world is global now. I'm not thinking Nigeria for the Data Science. I'm thinking on a global scale starting from Freelancing

I also think Data Science fits into accounting too since Accounting heavily rely on Data and Databases, it should be possible to adapt some knowledge from there ... my target gangan is Business Analytics

Also, thanks for the Cybersecurity response.. I really appreciate you for the confidence given !!

Hello Mr. Chinedu, you have given the best advise here. Yesterday, I downloaded phyton video on YouTube, to be candid, for the first of being exposed to programming, I have fallen in love with it. So easy compare to others I used to here about. I don't know how to use Twitter, can I connect you via other platform like fb or watsap sir? Thanks bro.

Alright. Find me on facebook "Chinedu Ukpe".

Congratulations! You already have the first two requirements:
1. The Desire
2. The Primary Tool.

NOW YOU NEED
3. The Goal - or preferably, something specific (like a project or two) you will like to achieve using software.
4. Internet subscription - You can learn all you need online.
5. Patience - You will be confused initially and you will find it difficult to make up your mind. Just choose one or two and follow to the end.
6. https://www.codecademy.com/ is highly recommended. Also http://www.udemy.com (paid with many special prices of <$10).
7. Take breaks and celebrate your little steps. You are on your way to being the best (when you can beat THE HARD CODER) grin

All the best.

Hey bro, I'm on the same part with you. I've been learning programming for quite some time. Nov 24 will make it a month I've been on Programming. Guess what? I'm improving day by day!
Before I went into learning Programming, I found out that there are various programming language, like java, c#, Python etc. From reviews I saw and read from various sources, I came to conclusion that I should start with python programming language. Moreover, there's this video tutorial about python programming language I came across here on Nairaland. It made me become too enthusiastic about python. But before this, I have this dream of creating a website which I can't disclose for now. I'll advise you, you really need to hold on a dream in order for you to last long learning Programming. What's that special thing that made you want to be a programmer? If you have an answer to this question, it will keep driving you to learn everyday.
I won't lie, it is not easy. Programming is very versatile and wide, it somehow gets complicated but with consistency, you'll overcome the stumbling blocks. So far, I've been able to run some codes on my own even after much practises.
Bro, I'll advise you to take ur time and watch that video tutorial. Start from the beginning, follow whatever he's doing there, let your pc be there with you. I'll drop the link below.
In order not to confuse yourself, make sure you have gone through all the videos and have done some practises, then you can go for pdfs or python apps.
Currently, I'm reading a concised pdf about python and using a tutorial python app(not python app itself, though I still have the python app) to learn and run some codes.

At first everything will be strange, confusing and frustrating. But don't give up. I created a thread here on Nairaland and I've dropped some questions when I got confused, we have programmers experts here ready to help a newbie, you can create yours as well. Don't pay anyone a dime to learn programming, atleast I didn't.
Like I said, Programming is a complex world on its own.
Lemme burst ur head a little, Programming is mathematics, but this time around not a boring one you'll need to just write on paper. Programming is a mathematics that you'll write and then get to see it create something spectacular and solving problem u can never think of. This will excite you I swear. Excitement comes in more again when you've successful ran some codes on your own after much practice.

Bro, start with python. It's very easy compared to what I've been hearing about java, c# etc. (Though I will eventually learn java after python)

Programmers like naijasensei, bovage, semtu, karleb, and etinosa1234 here on Nairaland has helped me tremendously. You can always call on them if you're stuck for more clarification.

Bon voyage as u start this beautiful quest.

Know exactly what you will like to do first. Do you want to be a web programmer, desktop applications programmer or mobile?

Here's an unpopular advice:

1. Master algorithms and data structures first. (Know your sorting and search algorithms very well. It will help you in programming for large data sets)
2. Learn basics about database(SQL) and networking. (In most cases, you will need to bind your program module with databases)
3. Learn general programming with perhaps python.
4. Advanced python with datascience or machine learning
Where can I learn those

Just go on youtube. There are so many free resources there.

For emphasis sake, learn data structures and algorithms. It is very important you understand it... but you may skip it if you are fine with being a mediocre/average programmer.
