That is what APC is aiming to cripple. This is why APC needs Abia state so bad. With Abia state they can successfully resolve the disputes and relieve Rivers state of Egbema, Obigbo, Ndoki and all Asa areas completely thus reducing the finance of PDP and watch the party go extinct.
All these is possible if Abia defect before Wike. Because if wike goes first, they will prefer crippling Igboland economy over the party's interest, something PDP did for 21 years.

It shouldn't have mattered where the oil wells fell in given the homogeneous nature of the ethnic groups.

Rivers state is an artificial creation. The borders make no sense. I have pointed this out in the past and was accused of land grabbing. There are so many Igbo communities from Imo and Abia trapped in that quagmire.

I can see where you are coming from. But beyond "defection" is a perennial morbid fear of the Igbo. That's the elephant in the room. You have to take that into consideration too. I'm not sure the APC leadership will ever keep their own part of the bargain. Remember that Amaechi is still there and really fought hard to keep those oil wells when some were given back to Imo during the tenure of Goodluck Jonathan.. I doubt it can go that smoothly even if the fat frog at Umuahia government house decides to jump into APC . The whole plan will develop a K-leg if somebody simply shouts "Nnamdi kanu" name at the middle of any of their meetings.. They will all start seeing Godzillas and kingkongs all over the place..
