Napoli to Rename Stadium After Death of Club Legend Maradona Maradona Widely Regarded as Napoli’s Greatest Player The mayor revealed the news on his official Twitter account, stating: “We will name the Stadio San Paolo in honour of Diego Armando Maradona! “Diego Armando Maradona, the greatest footballer of all time, Diego has died. He made our people dream, he redeemed Naples with his genius. “In 2017 Diego became our citizen of honour, Neapolitan and Argentine, you gave us joy and happiness. Naples loves you!” Intitoliamo lo Stadio San Paolo a Diego Armando Maradona!!! — Luigi de Magistris (@demagistris) November 25, 2020 È morto Diego Armando Maradona,il più immenso calciatore di tutti i tempi.Diego ha fatto sognare il nostro popolo,ha riscattato Napoli con la sua genialità.Nel 2017 era divenuto nostro cittadino onorario.Diego, napoletano e argentino,ci hai donato gioia e felicità!Napoli ti ama! — Luigi de Magistris (@demagistris) November 25, 2020 de Magistris’ confirmation comes after Napoli President Aurelio de Laurentiis confirmed to French sports channel RMC Sport that “we can consider the idea of calling our stadium San Paolo-Diego Armando Maradona.” Maradona spent six full seasons at Napoli, where he enshrined himself into the club’s history, winning two Serie A titles, one Coppa Italia and one UEFA Cup. He is widely regarded as the club’s greatest ever player. Maradona died aged 60, after suffering a heart attack in his home in Tigres, near Buenos Aires in his homeland. The 1986 World Cup winner had undergone successful surgery for a blood clot on his brain earlier this month. He was due to be treated for alcohol dependency. Maradona’s World Cup victory famously came after defeating England in the quarter-finals. The game included the “Hand of God” goal – where Maradona famously punched the ball past Peter Shilton to score.
