N1 Billion Loan To Imo Youths By Dr. Ikedi Ohakim by TochukwuC: 4:49pm On Mar 21, 2011 |
The Imo Youth Empowerment Programme (IYEP) of the Imo State government through which the Ikedi Ohakim administration and the 27 council areas intend to disburse the whooping sum of N1 billion loan to 12,000 youths in the state is heart-warming and commendable. It is commendable in the sense that it is the first time such a huge sum is being expended by the state to lift the youths from the drudgery of life. All we have seen before now were half-hearted efforts to empower the youths which at the end left them poorer than they were. Actually, there was no articulate and well-thought out programme to lift the youths. All we witnessed were situations in which the youths were deployed for destructive purposes such as thuggery and ballot-snatching. Owing to the neglect, many youths veered into other crimes of diverse descriptions. The N1 billion scheme deserves the support and encouragement of all to succeed. The committee charged with the responsibility of identifying deserving beneficiaries has a serious task at hand. First, government has to ensure that the committee is composed of men and women of integrity, not those who for a plate of porridge will sell their birthright. The committee, on its part, should ensure that only youth groups with well-articulated feasibility studies get the loans. There is no doubt that the Ohakim administration means well for the youths. Therefore, youths who get the loans should utilize them judiciously and for the purpose the loans are meant: that’s to create wealth and jobs not just for themselves but also for others. Some may argue that the scheme is coming late but one is sure: it is better to be late than never. The governor is sure to score some political point with the scheme. We only warn that he does not jettison it should he win in next month’s election. But should he lose, let his successor not drop the scheme because it is a laudable one. The state and her youths should move forward and government must play a major role to actualizing it. |

It seems that this Ohakim people no dey tire. Youths again? In God's name, what crime has youths in Imo committed against 419 governor? What is this his obsession with youths? Is it because they are esperate, inexperience, gullible or what? Just as Imo youths are recovering from the shock of being conned from the fictitious Ohakim's 10 million jobs, he came out with another scheme called loan. Since when has govt become a bank and Ohakim the bank manager? Imo youths! please run faster than you can from his hollow promises, because as Sam MBAKWE use to say "First fool no be fool but the second fool na him be proper fool". |
