Violent protests erupted in France with more than 133, 000 protesters (including 46, 000 in Paris) coming out today to protest several controversial clauses in a new security bill including one that forbids sharing images of French police officers brutalizing citizens. The protests were further exacerbated by the brutalization of an unarmed black man in his music studio few days back for a flimsy reason that he was not wearing a facemask. The police officers involved have been suspended.

Police fired teargas at the protesters as the protesters in turn pelted them with stones, injured some of them, lit fires and destroyed properties.

Demonstrations took place across France on Saturday against the proposed global security law and its signature measure to restrict the filming of police officers. They came as calls to withdraw it were exacerbated by cases of police violence this week.

A protest in the French capital went ahead after a court overturned a police ban. Arie Alimi, a lawyer representing a collective opposed to the law, called on Twitter for a march between Place de la Republique and Place de la Bastille, two central squares known for protests.

The collective, called "Stop Loi Sécurité Globale" or Stop Global Security Law, is composed of journalists' unions, human rights NGOs and other groups. They are advocating for the withdrawal of articles 21 and 22 of the proposed law, "which organize mass surveillance," and article 24, which would penalize the "malicious" dissemination of the image of police officers.
