I Gave An Honest Answer — Garba Shehu Reacts To Backlash Over Comment On Slain Farmers

Senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity Garba Shehu on Monday took to social media to clarify his statement earlier in the day that 43 farmers who were gruesomely murdered by Boko Haram fighters on Saturday in Borno had no military clearance to resume farming, Igbere TV reports.

Mr Shehu came under backlash after his statement in an interview on BBC.

He tweeted later, saying he gave an honest answer to the question of whether the security agents certified the area terrorist-free.

“Today, I found myself leading the trends in the social media for the wrong reasons,” he wrote.

“The State of Borno is essentially a military zone up till now that we are talking and much of what people do; much of where they go are governed by the exigencies of security.

“Routinely, traders, administration officials and even UN agencies get the green light to go to many of the areas to avoid trouble.

“Information from security agencies says that the Zabarmari marshlands are infested with land mines and movements in around those areas subject to military oversight.

“No one is delighted with the massacre in Zabarmari and there is nothing anybody will gain by playing blame games.

“The question I tried to answer on BBC was: did the security sign off on the area as being free of mines and terrorists? The honest answer is, no.”

I won't say more than that.

Over 40 farmers were killed in Borno village.

You Igbos have been celebrating this tragedy opening thread up and down on how the north is gone.

Farmers were killed in Borno village. But I have been seeing comments from the Easterners telling us how the whole of the north is gone and Wil never know peace.

The unity in the north is second to none!!

The killings happened not to Hausa or Fulanis.

The killings happened to kanuris of Borno.

But we share their pains!!

Killing of 43 innocent villagers in Borno is like a killing in kano to me.

For those mocking the whole north of Over the killings in Borno. Keep it up and enjoy!!

Dear people zabarmari We have failed you. To all those killed, May Allah grant them Aljannatu Firdaus.

It's a shame that the people in Zamfara, kastina, Kaduna villages and Zabarmari couldn't get the protection they deserve. This is a failure of the president, manifesting before our very eyes.

Shehu Garba and Femi Adesina are constantly in a state of morbid fear and confusion.
They know deep in their minds that they are defending lies and falsehoods but they are afraid of offending their emperor who is obviously dancing naked in the marketplace.

Where will they be after 2023? Will their children be proud of them? The internet never forgets. Some of the things that Garba Shehu and Femi Adesina will still come back to haunt them and their innocent children.
There is no peace for those who call black white and white black because of their selfish bellies.

The market will soon be over, both sellers and buyers will go back home.......

These people already sold their souls for money to the devil..
Let's assume it was their family members that were killed, will they be this calm?

I think when this evil administration ends a lot of the officials will answer and account for the numerous mismanagement they have done.

And moreover the south east should be aware because for now they are being pushed to come out to contest 2023 presidential election. A lot of atrocities committed by this administration will be had to clean.

The number 1 duty of govt is the security and protection of life and property, and unless there is a state of emergency, the constitution guantees us right to move wherever and whenever.

If you feel there is a treat, you either nuetralise it, or impose curfew, not to wait for people to come and collect permit, before goin out to find food when they are hungry.

Garba Shehu, Lai Muhammed and Femi may get lynched someday for their insensitive attempts at covering up the lapses of the general.. Most nigerians prefer to not hear anything, than to here the trio talk

When you Northerners were comfortably mocking end sars protesters, you think it wasn't painful too?

Nobody is/was celebrating the killing of the farmers, southerners are trying to make y'all know what it feels like when it hits home too, hence the sarcastic comments

Yes the whole north is NOT safe, the Kaduna pics you go about posting, who will continue to live there if everyone gets killed?

There is no unity in the north, only scared little urchins who have no balls to speak against their god bubu and buratai, including you

And what the hell do you mean by the killed are not hausas and Fulani's, but kanuris? Does it make any difference that they are Northerners? Why trying to differentiate them if y'all are united?

Nobody is mocking north, y'all are mocking yourselves if you refuse to come together and hold your leaders accountable for the nonsense they keep doing to you guys

You people will keep making it difficult for we non indigenes born and bred in Kano to defend you guys, nonsense.

At times I keep wondering if it was Garba Shehu, Femi Adeshina, or Lie Mohammed Nigerians voted for.
Dis guys are just doing their job cos that's what they are paid for (they have sold their conscience).
And many of them trying to stay loyal in order not to lose their job.

Buhari is to be blame.
The worst president ever in the history of Nigeria.
A president that has no sympathy for his country people.

Even during GEJ time, he will surely visit the scene of any terrorist attack.

In a country wia we have millions of highly intelligent personnels, how come we now choice a dullard has our LEADER?

God Nigeria is our Jerusalem
Nigeria is our Zion
Nigeria is our promise land
Nigeria is our heaven on earth
Save us from this slavery leadership

Deal with Buhari and his cabals the way you dealt with King Pharaoh.

Nigeria will surely rise again.

Ahhhh Mr. Garbagge, well done o! Trying to defend your Pay Cheque.
I'm still very shocked (just like our darling daddy) and amazed that there's not a massive protest in the north as of yet. If na girl wey dress somehow now, or blasphemy, wahala go happen.

Do they have another kind of brains over there? Why not stand up and ask for what's right?
