romeo: objection |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by Nobody: 11:45pm On Jul 24, 2007 |
I think, if you want to say something is "Precious', you'll say the thing "di onu" or "gararu onu". Nowadays they use it for expensive but I think it's all the same. |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by monshege: 11:52pm On Jul 24, 2007 |
katherinae: Donzman: objection |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by Nobody: 12:22am On Jul 25, 2007 |
Ihe di precious bu ihe di oke onu, read your Igbo bible if you don't believe me!. . .Precious blood of Jesus, Obara Jesus di oke onu, remember your sunday school? |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by Nobody: 2:03am On Jul 25, 2007 |
but you don't use oke onu in every day Igbo. omaricha is the same adjective as precious. But in sentences you can use other variants like, omaka amaka. e.g This girl is precious. This girl amaka This is so precious This thing amaka what a precious gift this is omaricha gift anunwa sef i love precious things a likekirim ihe di nma babyosisi is a precious lady babyosisi di ezigbo oke onu the girl di egwu |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by Nobody: 2:51am On Jul 25, 2007 |
Babyosisi di oke onu, a na ebughari ya ka akwa (egg)! |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by monshege: 2:58am On Jul 25, 2007 |
Donzman:hahahaha i toff my hat for you i still object though. you are giving some probable characteristics of precious and not the meaning of precious. a precious thing is priceless, and even if it is priceful, it could be cheap. what makes it precious? is it the price tag or the worth? precious is the value of it. go throug that ekpere na abu igbo ma o bu bible igbo and let me know what it says about value or precious or worthy babyO, the same goes to you omalicha is beautiful and not precious, babyosisi: sorry babyO, o putara na babyO is expensive |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by Soundmind(m): 12:39pm On Jul 25, 2007 |
I think the word should be di oke onu. It is not omaricha, omaricha is beautiful. Gararu onu = expensive, costly. relates to pricing. amaka = goodness. precious =di oke onu. concerns quality ezigbo oke onu=very precious ( as someone opined) @ Donzman What part of igbo are u from? Is like u are from my area. I am from Enugu Ezike in Nsukka Zone in Enugu State. |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by romeo(m): 1:21pm On Jul 25, 2007 |

chai, u guys thank u very very very much, i appreciate it, though now im slightly more confused than clarified. |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by Nobody: 12:06am On Jul 26, 2007 |
@Soundmind I'm from Anambra state, Oraifite to be precise. @Monshege It seems you're only objecting, look around you, there is no judge here. . .I believe if the people who translated the bible used "oke onu" for "precious", then that should be it. There are some Igbo words in the Igbo bible you do not hear nowadays. Omaricha = Beautiful. . .It does not mean precious. |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by monshege: 3:50am On Jul 26, 2007 |

Re: Igbo Word For Precious by youngies(m): 11:32am On Jul 26, 2007 |
From the above it could be seen that there is no way omaricha = beautiful is part of the meaning of precious |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by youngies(m): 11:39am On Jul 26, 2007 |
Therefore, it is safe to translate precious as any of the following: ihe di oke onu ihe enweghi atu ihe nwere oke ihunanya ihe adighi azuta n'ahia ihe kwesiri ntukwasi obi @monshege Objection is welcomed |

Re: Igbo Word For Precious by magixian(m): 10:27pm On Jun 03, 2009 |
ehh? what about Ebube which is also used as Glory, o gbulu ebube, it look precious yet olamma is precious jewel! |

Ndi be anyi kwenu precious simple means (Ukwuu) Note not Great |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by Nobody: 10:35pm On Jun 06, 2009 |
magixian: Actually Olamma means Pretty/Beautiful Metal. Ola = Iron or Metal (also Ona) Hence, Ola Edo (Olaedo) = Yellow Metal i.e. Gold There doesn't seem to be an Igbo word for "precious" but if there is I think it went out of use so long ago that not many people remember it. |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by ChinenyeN(m): 12:49am On Jun 07, 2009 |
Well. . . I think we do actually have a linguistic construction(s) that could be equivalent to "precious", but not necessarily a "word", if I'm not mistaking. And because Igbo is a rather technical language, we're going to end up describing the word and attributes of "precious", usually in relation to the specific context. So from my understanding, they would be: 1. Ihe Makarikasiri Examples: Nwaanyi ahu makarikasiri 2. Oke Onu Ahia Example: Ihe na di m oke onu ahia |

Re: Igbo Word For Precious by Nobody: 12:23am On Jul 16, 2009 |
I FOUND IT!!!!! The Igbo words for precious are Oko (High tone on the second O), Ngala (High tone on the N) and Oya ( Low tone on the O and High Tone on the A). I found it in a pre-colonial manuscript I'm researching. The manuscript is dated 1884 so I am sure it is correct. Also, Ngala (Mid tone on the N, Low tones on the both A's) means Expensive |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by agabaI23(m): 12:38am On Jul 16, 2009 |
Monshege, Ikwuru eziokwu. 'precious' dika 'priceless'. Omaricha abughi ya di oke onu abughi ya. I ji maa atu, 'a precious baby' bu nwa amutara mgbe di na nwunye chogidegoro nwa ma ha ahughi ya. Precious na Igbo bu . . . . . . . ihe bara oke uru is the closest i can go. |

agabaI23: I found it. Scroll up and read. |
Re: Igbo Word For Precious by agabaI23(m): 12:27pm On Jul 16, 2009 |
sugabelly: Oko based on the pronounciation must be another way of writing Uko which means scarce and is about the same thing as precious. O di uko, it is scarce but can also be interpreted as it is precious. The use of O instead of U could be colonial problem just like we have Awkunawnaw instead of OKUNANU I think you are correct. |
