My mum recently died and my old man is all by himself. He really doesn't like dog but I still want to get him one as a Christmas gift. The feeding won't be a problem because I will make sure there's enough food supply to feed him for a year before I get to visit him again.
I just don't feel it's right for him staying by himself at his old age. I will prefer one that won't really give much problems because this will be his first time getting to own a pet.

Get him a dog that will require little exercise needs, will always be by his side and also guard him.

How old is he? How healthy and strong is he?

Some old men still enjoy going for walks, tend their garden etc others are too old for walks or have weak joints.

Our local dog can be a very good companion for an old man. Little to no health problems, easy to train and very loyal. But if the local dogs are not a thing for you, get him a bull mastiff. They require little exercise and can sleep by your leg all day.
