The Minister of Defence, Major-General Bashir Magashi, has said that the armed forces need indigenous hardware and equipment, which should be produced and utilised to tackle the myriad of security challenges facing the country.

Magashi noted that the military needs to look inwards for ammunition and weapons if the armed forces are to have an advantage over its many adversaries.

The minister stated these in Abuja while opening a modern research centre at the Defence Research Development Bureau, Asokoro.

According to a statement by Kabir Bala for the Director, Press and Public Relations, of the ministry, Magashi said, "The bureau would be a key driver to the employment of unique and modern techniques for the operations of the Armed forces as well as facilitating the self-reliance drive.

"It is essential for the military to be highly innovative and self-reliant in producing indigenous hardware to beef up the insufficiency impeding efficiency in operations.

"This development calls for self-appraisal in vision and determination to our military requirements. In the face of the challenges, there is the need to evolve a new concept of 'Made in Nigeria' for military equipment and platforms.

"This bureau is a dire necessity because it will avail the country an avenue to develop and implore technology needed in curtailing the current security challenges."

DICON have been there for many years yet the military goes outside the shore of this nation for procurement.
Meanwhile, "....President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday said “Nigerian problems require uniquely Nigerian solutions’’.

Magashi noted that the military needs to look inwards for ammunition and weapons if the armed forces are to have an advantage over its many adversaries.

What's DICON being funded for if they aren't already doing that? DICON claims to manufacturer such things on their website. The company even today claims the lucrative arms market has ended funny enough. Maybe someone should update their website.

The first Technical Partner of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON) was Fritz Werner of Western Germany. FW designed and built the Kaduna Ordnance Factories in 1964 with the following production capacities:

5000 units of BM 59 Rifles per annum,

18,000 units of SMG 12 per annum,

12,000,000 rounds of 7.62mm x 51 per annum and

4,000,000 rounds of 9mm x 19 per annum.

The Nigerian Civil War which occurred between 967 -1970 necessitated the tripling of the above production rates and the factory was thus able to make a significant contribution to the war effort. After the war in 1970, the lucrative arms market for DICON ended. Therefore, in order to remain in business DICON decided to use its equipment to produce civilian items like rural water supply equipment, industrial spare parts and furniture for sale to the public.

And its news.

But not anymore

Nigeria can't wait.

It will take years to develop up to the standard needed to defeat Boko Haram.

Nigeria should be industrialized with a plan but never in a haste to achieve the unachievable.
