Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) are parasites of man as they feed on blood. Adult bed bugs are 4-5mm in length, flat and oval in shape and red-brown in colour. They do not like bright light so are usually found in cracks and crevices in headboards, bed frames and in the stitching around the edge of mattress. Eggs are white and approx 1mm long. Bed bug numbers have seen a considerable increase in Lagos, due to a change in people's travel habits. Infestations often occur as a result of bed bugs being brought in from journey in baggage or on clothing. One female bed bug will go on to lay 2-500 eggs over a 2-month period, so bed bugs can multiply rapidly if left untreated.
